Transferring from Community College to Yale?

I know this is very typical, but I have dreamed to go to Yale and after doing a lot of research, I am really (satirically) dying to go there. So, I'm wondering if possibly someone could tell me if they think I would make a proficient candidate. I go to a regionally accredited community college. I do not have SAT scores as of now, but I am taking them on January 28th.

GPA 4.0

I am a first generation college student, child of a deceased parent, and also a minority (Mexican-American)

Transfer admission is quite tough–tougher than freshman admission in most cases. In general, I’d say that you’d have essentially no chance transferring from a community college, but your profile is compelling enough that I’d say you have a shot. Not a big one, but your chances aren’t zero.

With that said, however, I know next to nothing about transfer admission, so please take all of this with a (very large) grain of salt.

Based on what I’ve seen on CC and heard anecdotally, Yale accepts a transfer student from a community college every 3-4 years. So it happens, but rarely.

There are lots of threads about transferring to Yale if you do a search within this forum. Your high school record will matter more if you’re aiming to transfer after your first year vs. your second year. Your transfer essay should be killer.

Yale allots 30-40 seats per year to transfer students.

Good Luck.

D1 was a soph transfer who graduated last spring, there were no CC transfers during the 3 yrs that she was at Y. Please see this thread for related information:

JSherm: it’s more like 20-30 from what I understand.

^^^Indeed:

And last year Y took out a sentence on this webpage that stated that they gave special consideration to CC candidates. I’m glad they did, because it was very misleading to CC students considering applying as a Y transfer.

OP, please note: Stanford also accepts extremely low numbers of transfers, but they do seem to give some preference to CC and non-traditional applicants.

Because of the extremely low number of transfers to schools like Y & S, it is difficult to tell how much of a factor being Hispanic will be.

I have one question, are the courses you posted for fall and spring of this academic year or will you have finished those courses by the end of this semester? Because if you are applying to transfer as a soph, that will be even more difficult as your HS record (gpa and course rigor and standardized testing) will be weighted more than your college record as you will have completed only 1 sem when decisions are made.

Also, while mostly for HS students and fr applicants, the Hispanic Students forum (under College Admissions, Specialty Topics) has much good information and supportive posters. And there is an active Transfer Students forum as well.

Thank you everyone who responded!

I would be applying as a sophomore… these classes are from this semester and next semester.

So I have also applied to a summer medical program that Yale does–If I get accepted, would it be worth mentioning on my application?

SMDEP? If so, yes as it’s pretty competitive.
