My son is in his second year at Chico State as a Comp Sci major. He has been very happy with the school, but for various reasons is looking to possibly transfer next year, but I know that it can be very difficult to transfer from CSU to a CSU or UC. My question is, since everything is remote anyhow, would it make sense for him to “withdraw” from his current CSU at the end of this semester, do spring semester at CC, and then transfer? Does that help his chances at all? I know CompSci is a competitive major to begin with, let alone transfer into. He has pretty good grades (all his major classes are As) but he’s not a 4.0. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
If he wants CC transfer priority, he would need 30 semester or 45 quarter units completed at the time of transfer. One semester at a CC would not meet that requirement. If there is any reason he would consider staying at Chico state if he did not get into any of his choice transfer CSU’s or UC’s, then it might be best for him to stay. If costs are an issue or certain transfer requirements are needed to be taken at a CC, then it might be a better choice to do Spring at a CC.
Also if he wants local priority at a CSU, he would need to complete the majority of his transfer courses at a local CC.
Ah, ok, thank you. So it’s the amount of units from the CC that count. If he had the majority of the units from CSU, and then a semester of units, say 15, from the local CC, he would not qualify for transfer priority, is that correct? At the end of this semester he will have completed 42 units (semester) I think.
At the time of application in October/November, if he is still taking courses at a CSU and not a CC, he will not get CC priority for either a CSU or UC.
For local CSU priority, he would need to have the majority of his units taken at a local in-service area CC.
It is certainly possible to transfer from one CSU to another - and people also go from CSUs to UCs. But just like for freshmen, some campuses are more competitive than others.
It probably doesn’t make sense to withdraw during the semester - especially since all of their classes are now remote. It is really hard to regain momentum after taking time away from school. I’d keep working toward the degree while you figure out the transfer plan.
Where does he want to transfer to and why?
