transferring from east coast

hey guys, im at the east coast ivy league school for my first semester, and it is too expensive for me besides some other smaller factors that im not happy about. so if i dont get a good scholarship here for next year, id have solid reasons to transfer out. i transferred here from community college in ca, so i have only two more years to graduate. i was wondering if it is possible to transfer to usc from an ivy, and if the financial aid is good at usc. are there any limits on the number of credits after which i would not be eligible to transfer, because i have a lot..? how high are the chances of transferring anyway? i got high sat's and gpa, extracurriculars at my other school, could get good recommendation letters.

Hi fedfed,

You might try browsing through the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/743892-usc-2010-transfer-thread.html</a> . It is at 130 pages and growing, so there is a LOT of information there.

Yes, USC has very good financial aid, but it is generally not quite as good as the financial aid at most of the Ivy League schools. If you do not qualify for financial aid there, what would be different at USC that would qualify you for financial aid?

im an older student and the specific program im in has bad financial aid for nontraditional students. but my efc is very low and im eligible for pell grant, so if usc awards aid based on fafsa i should be in a better position.

is it possible to transfer for the spring semester? i saw on usc website that they dont have a separate applications but they consider admitted students for the spring class, how does that work? because they send out acceptances only by june 1st. i would like to try to transfer for spring '11 , is it possible?

The good news is that USC awards the same financial aid to transfers as to students who begin as freshmen. They do, however, also use the CSS/Profile to determine need, so the amount you are expected to contribute may differ from your FAFSA EFC. LOTS of financial aid info here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/839970-faq-usc-financial-aid-2010-a.html?highlight=faq+financial+aid</a></p>

You are correct, there is no “Spring Semester” application. The Spring semester admits come from the pool of applicants for the previous fall. So to be admitted for Spring 2011, for example, you would have had to apply for Fall 2010 admission last January. The earliest term you can currently apply for is Fall 2011, and that application for transfer students will be due approximately February 1st, 2011.

IMPORTANT: Financial aid applications for transfer students have the same due dates as for freshman, so your FAFSA and CSS/Profile will also be due February 1st or 2nd. Don’t wait until after you apply for admission to apply for financial aid if you cannot attend without it!

Good luck!
