Transferring from GWU to UMD?

Greetings Everyone, I need some advice; I would like to transfer from GWU to UMD college park; I applied to GWU as ED 2 and was accepted, i applied ED 2 mainly because I was afraid of not getting enough financial aid without doing so, I also was accepted into UMD college park fall semester 2011, I knew in my heart that I rather go to UMD but got caught up in the rankings of GW and kept listening to people tell me the school is better for what I want to study; I am in the Elliott School of International of Affairs at GW, majoring in International Affairs but my experience thus far at GW has not been enjoyable I do not like living in the city and the overall experience is not how i expected it to be; People keep saying GWU has a better rep and will get me better jobs than UMD..(im in state at umd btw) I really dont know what to do!! I know I truly love UMD I am comfortable there and I love the atmosphere! But will transferring lead to me to missing out on academic opportunities at GW? I was thinking why dont I get my 4 year college experience at UMD and then do graduate school at the elliott school? I really need help any suggestions or people who know about the gov/politics program at umd vs. gw...ALSO at UMD it will COST A LOT LESS,

That would settle it for me. They’re both good universities.

GWU is great for building connections due to its location. But if you’d rather go to UMD, fine. Keep in mind that GWU excels in international relations and political science and is consistently ranked at the top for those areas.

gwu is my top choice 2nd is american u third umd. im instate. Its four years. you are already in GWU and from the looks of it you can afford it. I feel like umd is eh so so. why does your experience suck in gwu? Your input may change my mind to go to umd instead of gw if im accepted to either. im a transfer student for fall sem.

As someone who has networking/intern/jobexperience in DC, both schools will give you the exact same amount of connections, believe it or not. I was in the same boat as you (attended a really expensive, better “ranked”, but transferred to state school) and I still have the same networking opportunities.

Yes, GW has a “better” IR program, but that doesn’t mean UMD itself doesn’t have strengths. Both are located in the Metro area so you can still intern as much as the Colonials can.

Basically, if there’s one thing I want to relay to you it’s this: if youre unhappy, don’t waste $$$$$ on it. You have just as much of a chance at the cheaper university.
