Ok, I don't know anything about any of this stuff, so please help me out here.

I want to get a degree in Computer Science from the CMU SCS. However, I doubt I'd get into SCS if I applied right out of highschool.

Is it a realistic idea to apply to IS and then transfer to SCS? Would this be difficult? Would it cost me an extra year of tuition or would they give me credit for courses I took in IS?

You can get credit for the courses you take in IS (so long as they are courses that apply to BS CS - most freshman courses are I think).

But you can’t assume that you’ll be accepted as an internal transfer, its still competitive and you have to be qualified from what you’ve done in your freshman year. So you should ask yourself if you would be happy with IS in the case that you can’t transfer into SCS.

Yeah, I kinda figured that, and yeah I’d be happy in IS, perhaps even more so than in SCS. I prefer doing the practical, but I prefer the prospects of learning the theoretical. Anyways, thanks a lot for the answer.

Lol if you like IS better, then maybe you should major in that and minor in computer science for the theory.

One thing that you should consider–if I have my information right, is that even if you never get into SCS, you can always get a “dual major” or “additional major” in computer science. A dual major is getting two separate bachelors degrees, requiring several extra courses. An additional major is when the courses you have taken apply for both majors. It could be possible to not take a single extra class, if you schedule it right and pick a compatible major. Both degrees are-to my understanding–no acceptance into SCS required. So I’m thinking that whether you call it a dual major in IS/CS or additional major, that would look pretty darn good on your resume! Though I don’t know how many classes from IS are going to work for CS, I know there are some majors that are really compatible with CS.

That’s a pretty neat idea, thanks for that busdriver. Hopefully I’ll be able to talk to an admissions person when I head down to check out CMU later this summer. I’ll report back I’m trying to do something similar to what Marshmellowman wants to do.

I’ll be attending for IS this fall and this what I’ve heard so far.
Some IS students tend toward Business and some tend toward Comp Sci. A lot of kids double major because many of the IS requirements can count for the HSS Gen Ed requirement. It all depends on how strong you are at those subjects. The starting salary for IS is pretty good, the average is 62K which includes graduates who have gone to foreign countries like Singapore where living costs and pay are not comparable.
