Hi Guys,
I am a current biomedical engineering student at Johns Hopkins, and I want to transfer to Middlebury. This decision was made because I want to be closer to home, in a rural location and have a smaller, more liberal-arts based education. I would be a math or chemistry major.
Some stats:
I am a Vermont Resident
SAT: 2290
ACT:33
HS GPA: 3.91
AP chem/bio/phys/calc/gov/apush
I had research, club leadership and extensive hiking/mountaineering experience that got me in to JHU BME. I originally wanted to come because they have the #1 BME program but it is not my cup of tea so to speak.
At JHU I am doing stem cell research, I give tours, I am a member of a few clubs and I started a martial arts club. I also work.
My first semester grades will probably give me a gpa of between 3.5-3.7 since I am taking orgo currently and will probably get a B

Do you think I will be able to transfer? I would still be offering to do research at Midd.

If you want a more liberal arts based education wouldn’t the obvious solution be to switch majors to a more liberal arts based one? It’s not as though JHU doesn’t offer chemistry or math.

I usually don’t pay much attention when someone says they want to attend a LAC in order to get a liberal arts education. All but a few colleges in the US can provide a liberal arts education if that’s what the student seeks.

I read those things and understand the desire for a location closer to home. However it seems that given how difficult Middlebury is for transfer students (although I’d be quite surprised if his JHU affiliation did not substantially help his chances), the OP should look for better options at his home university. There are more feasible alternatives within Vermont, but with the exception of UVM (a transfer safety IMO), all would likely be a giant step down from Johns Hopkins.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but I’m responding to the information given in the OP. I’m guessing someone smart and accomplished enough to get into BME at JHU has a pretty good understanding of their college options in VT/NH as far as both acceptance rates and academics.

UVM is an option, thank you all for the responses, I had a previous posting a while back on possibly transferring to UVM. Midd is the same price though and although I dont really believe in the whole “step down” kind of thing it would be nice to be among a small group of people on the same level. I was also considering applying to Dartmouth (legacy) along with Williams and Amherst, but Middlebury is my primary concern
