Transferring from L&S to Engineering?

How difficult is it to transfer from L&S to Engineering? I checked the lower division requirements and they are very similar to what I need to take for MCB (Math, Chem, Bio wise). The only problem I see is that as a freshman I'd have to take a freshman seminar (BioE 24 and/or BioE 25), E10/BioE10, and E7/CS 61A. I don't know if I'll be able to take these classes since I'm in L&S and not the College of Engineering, or does the college I'm in not matter?

I've taken AP versions of the three classes mentioned, and hopefully will retain enough information as to do well in the class! I believe those courses are known as the weeder ones, so if I can do well in those classes as well as my other classes, I'm sure I can maintain a high GPA so I can transfer. Thoughts? Things I should be aware of? Or should I just stick with my MCB major?

And while you’re advising, do you suggest I retake Spanish as my foreign language, or take Vietnamese? I took Spanish for 3 years in high school, but I literally know nothing… Spanish 3 consisted of me sitting in classes playing Tap Tap Revenge on my iPhone with my friend who will also be attending Cal (we both got A’s, but we don’t know how). I would say I know less Spanish than a kindergardener… As for Vietnamese, I AM Viet and I speak it with varying levels of proficiency. Catch is I can’t read it. I’ve never taken a class or went to Vietnamese school like some kids do. Many adults comment on my fluency, but that’s conversational Vietnamese. Surely it’d be different for real, grammatical Viet (if there’s such a thing). Are language classes hard at Berkeley? Which language should I take? I’m a very lost and confused college soon-to-be freshman! :(

Only a few classes are set up to require specific colleges. Two of those are E7 and E10 which only have openings for CoE (and also CoC for one of them); nobody from L&S can register. I did notice that lecture 002 of E7 has no such restriction, so I guess you could register for that, but it appears that all four lecture sections of E10 are restricted. BioE10 and CS 61A are fully available to you, as is BioE 24 seminar.

Others have done this and will undoubtedly chime in with more practical suggestions.

All they really care about is that 1. You’re taking enough engineering classes such that you’re on schedule to graduate in 4 years and 2. You have good grades in those classes (3.5 or higher). That in itself isn’t an easy feat but if you can do it you’re golden.

First of all, it depends which branch of engineering you are applying for. If you’re applying for EECS, a near-perfect GPA in your first year is a prereq. It seems like you’re applying for BioE and that is also one of the harder departments to get into. You have to hope that many will get out of CoE so people like you can fill in.

Second, don’t worry about the restriction for E7 and E10, those two classes are never filled up (even if they do, many will drop out) and later are open to L&S students even though right now it’s only reserved for COE and CoC students. Berkeley won’t stop you from taking whatever classes.

Btw, there are no AP versions of E10 and E7… CS61A may be waived, but you’ll quickly realize that the difficulty of the APs is a child’s play once you take some classes in Berkeley. My suggestion is you take the CS61A rather than jumping right into CS61B. (if you have a choice between E7 and CS61A, I would take E7 any day though…)

Taking foreign language while working on your CoE is totally fine; you can still graduate in 4 years. However, if you really don’t know your Spanish, you might just re-start w/ a new language. Berkeley’s foreign language department is pretty notorious b/c of its heavy reading and oral/vocab quizzes slapped you on daily basis. You really got to be dedicated to take a foreign language class in Berkeley.

But most importantly, you should ask yourself do you really want to switch into CoE. Try to find what you are really interested in.
