Hey, I’m a senior right now in high school. Next year, I’ll be attending Northeastern but I really want to go to USC for Business (cuz they have a real estate major). However, I need to go abroad for first semester (NUin) and the classes abroad aren’t counted in my GPA. I’m afraid that this first semester abroad will hinder me from being a strong candidate for USC since when I apply, I will only have 2 semester worth of classes (even though I’m transferring as a junior). I’m also going to Co-op during the 2nd semester of my sophomore year, so I will only have 2 semester when I transfer as well. Do you guys think this will affect my chances? Also, does anyone know someone who went to NEU and transferred?
Why do you have to go abroad? You will basically be wasting one year since you will technically be a sophomore if you transfer with only 2 semesters worth of credits.
@Dontskipthemoose I have to go abroad cuz I got in for spring term (they require people who got in for spring term to go abroad). Well I guess I can take a summer semester to catch up…
@west123 I think that is pretty ridiculous because what if the student never intended to study abroad during his college experience? Is there a reason besides the real estate major that you want to transfer to USC? I mean a real estate major isn’t required to become a realtor.
@Dontskipthemoose NUin is a pretty great program, I think. I believe it’s given to students who barely didn’t make the cut for the Fall. Those students get the chance to attend a great university instead of being waitlisted or rejected.
@Jpgranier why don’t they just have students enter in the spring without studying abroad? I know a couple of other schools offer January admission and they encourage study abroad, but they don’t force you. What if you are like an engineering or business major and you normally wouldn’t have had the time to study abroad since it basically derails your academic trajectory?
@Dontskipthemoose Yeah, I think its pretty ridiculous too…
I want to transfer to USC because of the great connections that it can give me. Also, my family lives in USC so I can commute to USC if I get in (don’t need to pay housing).
@Dontskipthemoose As far as NU.in goes, the locations for abroad are major specific, and going abroad earlier makes it easier to fit into the schedule as well. It’s certainly not for everyone, but it’s a great experience for some. Doing classes in fall means your graduate at the same time, where spring admits for other schools are a semester behind from the start. It’s also obviously something you can turn down - just like you can with a spring admission.
I agree though, it doesn’t seem like Northeastern is the best choice if you’re planning to transfer…
USC isn’t going to offer any sort of huge difference in connections - co-op serves a very similar purpose at Northeastern. The cheaper option obviously makes sense, but it still sounds like it will be expensive at USC. Did you have any other options besides Northeastern?
@west123 you should have gone to Community College if your intention was to transfer. For kids who are NOT planning on leaving NEU, the study abroad program gives an opportunity to actually get 4 courses done and stay on track to graduate with the rest of the class.
I would either withdraw from Northeastern (if I were you) or go in with the expectation that you’re staying and not with the mindset that you’re transferring. You may love it and decided not to leave for USC. I really don’t see us you having a lot more connections than Northeastern but you are from California so that probably is your perspective.
Agree with @suzyQ7
@suzyQ7 I feel like going to community college and transferring thing is a bit overrated and risky. I know that they take a lot of CC kids but I dont think its too bad of a difference.
Yeah its probably cuz Im california but a lot of people here has never heard of northeastern. I want to work in california after college so I was thinking USC would be better.
Your right. I should have a more positive mindset of the college Im going to. I
