Hello everyone! It seems I have come quite a rough spot in my earl college education. I am currently attending the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa for my undergraduate degree in Marketing. First off, I despise this city and this college. I was unwise to choose this college and made the choice solely based on my friends going here. I never visited any other colleges and am extremely regretful because of it. In high school I received a 3.4 cum. GPA and only received a 22 overall ACT score but am a very mature and open-minded individual. It had been my dream to be an engineer and attend Iowa State University but my lack of ACT score forced me to think otherwise and thus I chose a major in Marketing. (another one of my top interests) Well my first semester here was fun, too much fun actually and I got a 1.4 GPA after I failed two classes and got a D in another. Soooo, this semester I am on academic probation which came as a shocker to myself and my parents as I have never been a bad student. I have come to the realization that school really needs to be my top priority and am determined to get a 4.0 this semester at all costs. However I am looking to transfer out of UNI after next year when my GPA is back up. I am considering the University of Iowa for their good business college. However I'm not 100% sure and need some input on it and possibly out of state colleges. Thanks for all the help!

You’re starting to wise up. This is your chance to get the education you want. Engineering is hard. But there are ways, if you want it. Maybe you can’t get into Iowa or Purdue engineering. Look around. There are ways. Maybe you’ll have to invest two years into getting your GPA where it needs to be. If you get it up, and are sincere, you’ll get in somewhere. It doesn’t hurt to start looking. There must be engineering programs that will accept you, once you’ve pulled your GPA up. Drake or Bradley, for example?

You should take the classes that will count toward engineering. It’s not like they will hurt you from getting a business degree if that’s where you end up anyway. Math and science are always good. Maybe you’ll have to spend another semester or take some summer classes at CC. NBD.

Right now it’s all about damage control. Get the GPA up. Be a great student, visit your profs in office hours, etc. It’s too early to give up.

I take it that you are in-state for the Iowa public universities.

I have a good friend who flunked out of engineering at U of Iowa because he was having too much fun. He went home to Southeastern Community College in Burlington where he completed the first two years of engineering, and then had an automatic transfer to Iowa State where he finished up the rest of his degree. Umpteen years later, he’s still a working engineer and loves his profession. If you want to do engineering, I’d suggest that you follow that route.

If you are serious about business, in addition to the options of completing it at UNI or trying to transfer to U of I when your grades are better, you also should consider the community college first route. Read more about the articulation agreements (guaranteed admissions) between the Iowa community colleges and the business school at [AA Articulation Agreements - Requirements and Deadlines - Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Iowa](http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/requirements/xfer-aa-degrees.htm)

Good luck!

Lot of good stuff here! Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. It changes a lot but right now it seems that I am Iowa City bound at the end of next year. Going to keep my options open, this is the only time I want to be going to college in my life and I really need to just make the best of it.
