Transferring from one engineering university to another

Hi everybody,

This is my first post so please bear with me…

I was at Vanderbilt for 3.5 years and did absolutely terribly (think sub 2.0 GPA). I decided I needed a beating, discipline, and some time off so I joined the Air Force after being asked to leave by the University. During my 4 years in the Air Force I have excelled in everything I did and gained a lot of discipline and motivation to pursue a career in engineering. I worked and traveled all over the world fixing aircraft and would like to specialize in aerospace engineering. I am out of the Air Force now and am planning on attending a community college in hopes of bringing my GPA up possibly transfer to a reputable program.

The community college I plan on attending currently offers an associates in engineering science with an easy track to a bachelor’s in engineering at a local university. However, the local university does not offer aerospace. I was wondering if anyone has had an experience similar to mine where he/she attended community college to bring up the GPA and transferred to an engineering university. Also I was wondering how plausible it is to transfer from an electrical or mechanical engineering program to another university’s aerospace program (should I decide to attend the local university to bring my GPA up even more).

Thanks everybody

Could you not just complete the mechE program to which you have easier access? Then you could apply for aero jobs the same as an aero major while not being as limited as they are.

Thanks for the reply!

That is another option I considered. However, most of the major companies accept applicants from more reputable schools. Say I do mechE in the local university… How difficult would it be to transfer to another mechE program in a bigger state university?

Following. DS similar situation.
