I am going to The United States Merchant Marine Academy next year but I truly want to go to West Point. I just didn't apply in time for West Point this year does anyone know if you are able to transfer from one of the other service academies? And if so is the process the same as if you were just applying as a regular senior?

i hear its pretty hard to do that. they know that you can go army out of kings point.

I'm pretty sure you can't transfer. I don't have any evidence for it, though.

there was a kid in my company who transfered to air force. from what i gathered, he just applied and got in. my advice, dont come here if you want to go west point. for one, it means you will take a candidates spot that actually wants to come here. second, you will NOT be looked to highly on if thats what your plan is. save yourself the hassel and just go to civilian school. no reason to do two 4th class years

I think, for admissions purposes, you would be much better off attending one of the state-run military schools. You are much better off choosing one that focuses exclusively on Army Training, rather than an "all-in-one" school like the Citadel ( the LDAC scores for Citadel and VMI are abysmal compared to the other SMCs). One school you might want to look at is North Georgia, as the head staffer for my senator informed me that NGCSU is one of the academie's favorite schools to recruit from (I will be transferring there from GT, this fall).

Just wanted to put my two cents in regarding this issue. I agree that if you accept to one academy, such as USMMA with the sole intention of going to another you are doing a dis-service to yourself and others. The slots at USMMA are highly competitive and only about 290 (correct me if I am wrong 2009) get in each year. That being said, the BEST kept secret in the US for students looking for a career as an Army Officer is North Georgia College and State University (NGCSU). This school is located right next to the Ranger Mountain school and is all army, all the time! exceptional Army Officers have graduated from this school and it is the next best choice to West Point. The price is right and Army ROTC scholarships are there for the taking. Good Luck in what ever you try!

As far as I know there is no "transfer" - you will have to start over again.

Agree with comments above - don't go and waste a spot at USMMA. Going there won't necessarily help you get into West Point - you'd be better served going to a regular college and then reapplying to West Point. Just make sure you get good grades. Also, going to USMMA might actually hurt you - West Point will figure you're in an academy already, why give you an opportunity to leave USMMA.

The thing about North Georgia though is that it's pretty much crap to go to. The vast majority of the people that go there have no great aspirations for a military academy. I go to one of the biggest feeder schools to it, and the kids that go there from my school go there because they couldn't get in anywhere else rather than that they want to join the military in any way, shape, or form.

Granted, I have a rather limited perspective, but out of my senior class of 550, around 100 are going to North Georgia and most due to it's ease of admittance and close to home. If you want to go there, you have to be prepared for many of the people around you not having the same goals.

Also, the students there have been exceptionally rude on several occasions- mostly Spanish plays or lectures- and has left a completely horrible impression on me of the character of the school.

Cloud, you bring up a very good point. NG is also a comuter school and if you attend as a comuter student and are a male, you do not have to join the Corps of Cadets if you do not reside on campus. All males who reside on campus, must join the corps. As such, a high number of Corps of Cadet folks are out of staters or from a diff part of GA. They joined for the Corps and a Army career. I want to be clear, this is not Ivy League or even GT, but it is a fine school if your goal is to be an Army Officer. Every one in the country can't, or should not got to Harvard, UVA or West Point, but there are schools for everyone. The cadets do well in the Army Advance Camp and make good officers. Thank you for that other point of view, something to consider.

Don't know all that much about NG except for a few kids from our state that went there and that are doing well from what I hear. They weren't stellar students but thrived on the military lifestyle so it was a good fit. I agree with PHSNSI in that there is a school out there for everyone.

ggspin21 is at USMMA & I hope that he is doing well & the self doubts are gone. With all of the options at Merchant Marine, he could end up with his goal of becoming an Army officer yet! :)
