I was told that transferring to a public school from my current private HS would look bad on my college application. I have two older siblings in college now and we don't really have the money for all of it. My parents want me to stay partly because of the effect on my college application. The school I want to transfer to has a pretty good reputation as does my private HS. Any info or thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

i’m not an admissions officer,
but well you don’t have the money,
so i wouldn’t blame you for transferring
(on the other hand it might be kind of weird to explain that on your application because it shows you pay way too much attention to how admissions officers view you)

Why do you want to transfer?

My current school is full of people who think they are better than everyone because of their money. I realize that the same thing could happen at the school I want to transfer to but I know it isn’t as bad because my brother and sister both went there. Also, if I don’t really like it there then I’m not sure it is a good use of money.

Switching from private to public is a HUGE step. Trust me. I know.

I have tons of friends who are just dying to go to public school… and honestly I don’t understand why.

If there is a hardship on you at your school because of tuition costs… then that’s one thing. But most private schools are willing to give a lot more FA to upper students. (Juniors and seniors, for example) My school dramatically gives way more money to people in grades 9-12 than say grades k4-8. You just have to talk to the school.

If you want to change… I wouldn’t recommend it. There’s a common practice in public schools… where if a student transfers from a private school, they automatically assume that they are rich and spoiled. And they already have them judged. Now not all people are like this… but this happened to me both times when I transferred into public school. And the ironic thing was… I transferred because I couldn’t afford the tuition. =/

That being said… if you are truly unhappy… then maybe you should transfer.

Consider this… If you hate the school you transfer to… Will you be garanteed a place at your private school w/ no aid? If not… you should consider that. It may be too big of a risk.

I transferred from private to public in the middle of my middle school years. It was a bit hard at first (there were so many more kids at public school!), but it remains as one of the best decisions of my life. And I transferred for the same reason as you; everybody at private school was snobby.

Is there another public school nearby that’s better? My parents thought about sending us to private school, especially because my sister was born after the cut off date and had a lot of trouble being allowed to go to school “early.” But out public school is better/the same than every private school out here except for one that’s all boys anyway. And all of them have way fewer APs. If you go to a school with the same rigor, you’ll be okay.

It also depends a lot on where you live/the quality of the public high schools. I live in the “nicer” southwest suburbs of minneapolis and almost nobody goes to a private school because there is no need to. The public schools give a great education. In fact, a good friend of mine transfered from a catholic private this year to my school and likes it a lot better. My public experience has been great but I go to good schools so if you like your private and the publics are so-so, you might want to reconsider transfering.

I’m getting as much aid as the school will give by doing work-study right now. Also, the school I am thinking about transferring to is usually viewed as one of the better schools in my area. The private one is considered to be pretty good too though. But now people have me worrying that because I am transferring to a public school from private that colleges won’t like that. I didn’t do as good this year because I was gonna most of last semester for a sickness they still haven’t figured out yet. I was told because my grades weren’t as good as they were before it would look like I couldn’t handle private high school. Thanks for all the responses.

I’ve never understood the appeal of private schools. In my opinion, it’s actually better for the top students who go to a public school when it comes to admissions.

If the public has serious rigorous curriculum, and if YOU can get into the most rigorous classes, then perhaps. However if you will be an “also ran” at the public, you may want to stay at the private, where colleges will assume a tougher curriculum overall.
