Hey everyone,
My name is James, I am currently a honors freshman college student and track athlete at South Carolina State University. I am looking to transfer to Wofford College (Spartanburg,SC). I currently have a 3.7 GPA. Just made the deans list. According to the runners at Wofford, my times are good enough to run and be competitive on the team. But on the academic side, I was wondering what to expect looking at transferring to Wofford. Are they friendly and supportive of transfer students? Will I recieve aid? I know that the transfer requirement is only a 3.0, but will my GPA of a 3.7 be good enough?
Just looking for advice and help from anyone that knows anything about Wofford and the money offered to transfer students. I talked to the transfer admission counselors but didnt recieve much help.
For my reason transferring, I went to a predominately white high school, made alot of friends with the big cross country team and all my teachers loved me. It was obviously a culture shock going to a HBCU, which led to me being judged at times for the way i spoke or just the way i was. So I’m looking for something that feels like home and what I am used to. Thank you again everyone for your help!
I’m sure that you can get into Wofford, but doubtful regarding getting financial aid. At most schools, financial aid is limited for transfer students - call financial aid at Wofford. Are you being recruited by the Wofford coach - perhaps an athletic scholarship could be had at Wofford.
It would be quite a switch to go from SCSU as an HBCU to Wofford, which is fairly Greek and preppy!
My son has recently been accepted to Wofford. Great school . They are actively trying to increase diversity at the school. I think that you’ll enjoy the size of the school and how friendly everyone is. I would contact the financial aid office and speak with someone directly or schedule a visit to Wofford to investigate scholarship options .
I sent you a private message. Also, I encourage you to consider other schools outside of South Carolina that welcomes transfers and provides good financial aid to high caliber transfer students;
U of Rochester; yes it’s cold up there, if that’s important to you.
U of Alabama-Birmingham; very good in the natural sciences and it’s affordable, Not a mege-campus.
North Carolina A&T University
Belmont Abbey College (NC); like an LAC
Ohio Wesleyan University: like an LAC
U of Tulsa (OK); like an LAC
College of Charleston
Also, if you can handle the weather/climate in the mountain west. and you are a possible STEM major, think about South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, a small STEM university in Rapid City, SD. Mines track and cross-country program is D2, so there may some some scholarship money for that. In any event, the total cost of tuition is very affordable for OOS students. Also, the school and Rapid City are more diverse than you may believe. Finally, the surrounding area is beautiful.
