I am a freshman at the University of Alabama, but am from the state of Georgia. I got a few minor scholarships, despite of my generally weak HS performances. I ended up with a HS GPA of 3.1 and an ACT score of 31. Due to unforeseen monetary reasons I am going to have to transfer back to a Georgia school to get in-state tuition and and hopefully a couple scholarships. I would highly prefer to go to UGA, but am not sure about my chances. My college GPA at the time of applying will be a 4.0 using traditional grading scale, or about a 3.96 using plus/minus. I am taking multiple Honors courses and have made sure that all my credits will transfer. I am basically wondering what my odds are at being accepted into UGA with those qualifications. Thanks for the Help!

UGA’s requirement for between 30 and 60 credits is a 3.2 college GPA, and you well exceed that. You should be fine given the little bit info you’ve provided. If you don’t have 30 credits to transfer you can’t apply, as I understand.

Thank you for your response! I was planning on applying after the fall semester to meet the spring deadline date. At that point I would have 30 credits if you factor in my AP credits, (do these count?) but do they also give me advanced credit for the classes I will be attending at the time of my application? Because if not would be hard to apply to transfer for the fall semester if the deadline is before the end of the spring semester where I earn the rest of my credits.
That might be confusing, somewhat convoluted. Can i apply my after my freshman fall semester to transfer next fall assuming I will have over 30 credits when I start attending.

One trip to UGA’s website would easily answer all of the above questions.

No, AP does not count toward the 30 credit requirement. You must transfer 30 credits worth of actual transferable courses (so if you’re taking a weird class that might not transfer, that won’t count) before they will make a decision on your admission. That means you’re going to have to finish the entire year and start in the fall. They probably have a document deadline or something (check their website) sometime in the summer.

No, they don’t give you credit for classes you are currently in. They only give you credit for classes after you’ve completed them and had the transcripts sent to the school. The last semester before starting will not count towards your admission decision.

Ok sorry for the easily accessible questions, but I’m having trouble understanding a part of it, sorry haven’t slept much lately with midterms. When is the earliest I can transfer? I am taking 15 hours of transferable course work this semester and 15 hours next semester. But the deadline is April 1, so the earliest possible time to transfer would be Spring semester of Sophomore year? I guess it just seems weird because I assumed I would be able to transfer after 1 year. Thanks for the help again, if I’m interpreting that wrong please let me know, if not you have been a great help Thanks!

You’ll have to read their website more closely. I am sure they have an FAQ or something that answers this question. Some schools will have an Apr 1 application deadline then a June/Jul transcript (document) deadline and you could start in the fall (although they won’t make an admissions decision until they see your transcripts from your spring semester, meaning you’ll be rushing to get enrolled and everything in the summer). At others, you’d end up having to wait until the spring.
