Transferring from UCB to VT

If Minnesota and Stony Brook are the same price, I should pick Minnesota, right?

Bloody hell. I’m losing my mind!

Minnesota has the best engineering department.

Even better than Virginia Tech?

Don’t want to start a Minnesota vs Virginia Tech thread, so bumping this one up.
Again, the academic discipline in question here is Computer Engineering/Industrial Engineering.

…and California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo is another option.

Steven Skiena teaches at Stony Brook and that should be a plus if you want to study CS. I think that opportunities for internships locally aren’t as good as they are near major metros.

Hmm, Stony Brook would be a pretty good option considering its proximity to NYC, but does it really make sense to go to Stony Brook over UMN or VT?

Tyler - Cal Poly SLO is a great idea… but I am not familiar with non-CA pricing there. For in-state, it is about $5,000 less than a UC.

Cal Poly SLO for undergrad is of similar quality to UCSB, UCI and UCD, and better than UCR and UCM.

Re: Stony Brook – trust me, grad schools are very familiar with Stony Brook. Why would n’t they? It is among the top 100 universities in the U.S… and an hour’s train ride from NYC.

The Cal Poly website says that it is:
$19,125 + $226 per unit out-of-state tuition
How much would that be, approximately?

you should just go to virginia tech

Well, it is currently my first choice, but UMN is also right up there now.

I was just checking out the UMN website, and the OOS tuition at UMN changed from ~$22,500 to ~$14,500 last year. Is this a permanent change or just a temporary one?

why dont you aim for schools that offer financial aid to international students. Coming from berkeley with a good gpa, would get you into the schools that offer financial aid to the international students.

look into university of texas-austin and indiana

Indiana’s not a state I want to go to. UT Austin is about the same price as Georgia Tech…

VT costs about 26-28K total for out of state. The tution is about 18K. The food is #1 in the country. VT’s undergraduate engineering program is ranked #14 in the country and it’s industrial engineering program is ranked #9.I don’t see how you can lose by going to vt.

Thanks for your help guys.

Unless I decide to drop out in December and go to the UK, I will be applying to UMN and VT. If I get into both, I’ll go to VT.

If I complete one semester at Berkeley; and drop out for a year and apply to other schools for Spring '10, would I be considered a transfer student or a freshman?

Schools usually have minimum credit requirements for transfer students so you should look at what they will consider as a transfer applicant. I’ve seen something like 24 credits at one or two schools I looked at.
