Chances seem pretty high at first glance but
“i really, really need to”
seems a bit suspicious. Perhaps you would be the best judge of your own chances. Is the reason you’re transferring because the major you are pursuing isn’t offered at SB? Is it because of prestige? Is it (insert phrase)?

My experience with people who have transferred is that all of them have a really “good” reason for coming. Here’s an example: one of them took the hardest undergraduate math courses at his previous university and aced all of them. There was nothing else for him at that university (no research, no graduate classes). As a third year at Cal, he is taking graduate courses and doing research in low-dimensional topology under one of the “best” professors in that field.

Of course, your reason doesn’t have to be like ^ but again, you probably know best how “legitimate” your reasons are. Your GPA is fine but [we] have no extra information upon which we can provide feedback with.

And just saying, I considered transferring out of Cal my first semester but I asked myself “Why do I want to transfer?” My answer was prestige…

At first, I convinced myself to transfer because I found Cal too “easy.” But, I realized that I was just holding myself back with the lower division courses and I took some upper division and graduate courses my first year and I was pleasantly surprised.

Just saying, I had that feeling too but it’s completely gone. I thought I “really needed” to transfer but I did not actually need to. I don’t know what situation you are in, but if the reason you are transferring is academic, keep in mind that UCSB is a very good school and it has a very strong graduate program in certain fields.

Anyway, if you have a good reason and keep your GPA up, I see no difficulty in you transferring ^_^.

As a transfer from a four year I think simply “I don’t like where I am and I want to be happier” is a good enough reason. I’m also an SB local so I have no idea how you couldn’t like where you are ;-P. I went to a school that is considered (by the powers that be) more prestigious than Cal, but left because I wanted to move back to California and I really felt that Berkeley was a better place for me. After having a terrible first year at my ex-school (lol) my first year here at Berkeley has been incredible and I am so happy that I looked beyond prestige at what makes me happy. I’m guessing since you are also looking into Davis that you might be a Bay area local and it’s a money issue? In which case you’re probably making a really good decision. I know I saved a ton of money leaving private school and I feel a lot more comfortable about my future as a result.

As for your chances, I would say you have a very solid chance at Berkeley and are 100% in at Davis. Keep up your grades and make sure you take the necessary prereqs!

It’s hard to go from UC to UC. Your best shot is CCC to UC, if it’s that important. If you like UCSB but it isn’t ideal and being denied isn’t the end of the world, stay at UCSB and just give it a shot. I don’t know if the unit cap problem is still in place, but you need to worry about that too… also major prereqs. Make sure those are done. Use assist.org.

Correct. And you need a REALLY good reason for the adcoms to take you over a juco transfer. (‘better prestige’ is not a good reason) Remember, adcoms will see that you are already at a four-year UC, whereas the juco applicant has no where else to go.

That is a good reason.

Academics are another. For example, you want an undergrad major in biz, but SB does not offer it, so apply to Cal-Haas.

Yeah I want to transfer because SB doesn’t offer a few minors I was looking it to and because I’m a Bay Area native and want to save my parents some money.
But yeah! Thank you guys! I appreciate your replies a lot!

Don’t transfer to UCB. It’s miserable. The classes are cut-throat and competitive, the students are cocky and arrogant, the buildings are dilapidated and degenerative, and the air reeks of hobos and Cannabis. Don’t come here.
