I just graduated this year from high school, and USC was basically my dream school. I really wanted to go there, but did not get in. Some stats: went to private highschool, cum hs GPA of 4.14, SAT: 1960, father = alumni, above average extra curriculars. I know it was the SATs that screwed me over. I'll be a freshman at UCSD in the fall and really want to transfer ASAP. Should I even give it a shot or am I just waiting for another letdown? What're the things they look for in a transfer student. Any kind of advice you have will really help me. Thank you!

what's your intended major? I can help you out once I know that.

You might get a little variance between programs but what they look at the most generally is GPA, completion of average freshman # of units (32 at USC, but probably a different number at UCSD), and completion of courses toward general-ed requirements (like writing).

College GPA is key though. Your HS GPA, SAT scores, and ECs don't really matter if you have good college grades.

I know a guy in a similar situation, good GPA & ECs and slightly weak SAT, that got turned down by USC but accepted to most UC - he'll be at UCSD also. I might encourage him to apply transfer to USC but I think he might just stay at UCSD.

At UCSD I'll be majoring in Political Science/Public Law. I'd like to attend law school and possibly even at USC. In my rejection letter, they asked if I wanted to set up an appointment with an Admission's person who could help me create a transfer plan because I'm part of the "Trojan Family" rolls eyes, but things were really hectic at the time so I just didn't do it. Do you think I should take them up on that offer?

yes. If you really want to transfer to usc this is a great way for them to tell you exactly what they want to see, as well as letting them know you're really interested.

While I don't think it's an emergency or crucial to contact them ASAP, I would do it sooner rather than later. Especially since they prob. have advice on what UCSD courses to take, and also come fall they do get busy.

Your SAT (or HS transcript) won't even matter if you complete 30+ credits freshman year. MAKE SURE to complete a full year of english composition, orelse you'll be automatically rejected, seriously. And definitely take up that offer on the trojan family. I'm pretty sure that they're guaranteed an acceptance if they get a certain GPA or something. Someone in the transfer forum was talking about it a while ago.

Oh, and I think coming from a very well respected school like UCSD will help. If you an admissions rep, who do you accept...the kid with a 3.7 from UCSD or the kid with the 3.7 from a CCC?

Thank you all very much. I appreciate all of your help. I only have one more question. My only worry is that I'm not really required to take any English class at UCSD because of my AP Eng Lit score and major. My GE requirements are: 2 Fine Arts courses, 2 Quantitative/Formal Skills (math) courses, 2 Natural Sciences courses, 3 Regional Specialization courses (I'm focusing on Europe), and this 6 quarter history sequence called the "Making of the Modern World" that everyone has to take. I passed out of the Language requirement because of AP French Lang. The only relevant English requirement is an Upper-Division Writing Requirement where you have to write a paper 10-12 pages for an upper-division course so basically I won't really get to this until I'm a few years into UCSD. Should I take an English class anyways? I'm just worried that if I take an english class with the hopes of transferring to USC and then if I don't get in I would have just gotten behind on my GE and major requirements at UCSD. ;(

Well, from what others have posted, you simply won't get into USC if you haven't taken a writing class. So, if you want to transfer to USC, take the writing class even though UCSD doesn't require it. Or stick it out at UCSD.
