Ok, so currently, I'm a student at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and miserable here. This coming Fall I would be a sophomore. My dream was to attend the University Michigan-ANN ARBOR, but things didnt end up too well. Struggled horribly in high school due to a chronic illness, thought I was cured senior year, but what do you know, got sick AGAIN the beginning of my freshman year in college. And not to mention being overshadowed by two older brothers who happened to attend schools in New Jersey and Baltimore called Princeton and Johns Hopkins. Oh yeah, and I only have 1.5 lungs, not 2 like a normal human...I had to get surgery to remove a part of my left lung.

White Male, 19 years old.

HS GPA: An amazing 2.87(This is what happens when you go to the hospital more than school)

ACT: 26

-Played French Horn for the School symphonic Band(Highest/most prestigious band) freshman year-senior year
- played in the University of Michigan Youth Ensemble Band(One of the most prestigious musical groups in the state of Michigan) freshman year-Senior Year
-Varsity Soccer, 3 years
-Member of 3 clubs, and a treasurer for one of them.
-Been volunteering(still do) for a health organization. Feeding, and clothing impoverished children and the homeless.

College GPA: 3.34 with 31 credits complete...taking a 3 credit summer course right now that Im about to wrap up in about a week.
-Currently enrolled in the UM-Dearborn school of Business and Management.

I previously applied to UM-Ann Arbor LSA for Fall 2008 transfer... Got rejected. So I promptly applied for Winter 2009...which would be the semester after this coming Fall. I am considered IN STATE. I am sick of hearing my mother nagging me about how my brothers ended up, and tired of having to explain to people that no, I dont go THAT UM you know..I go to the other one. But most of all, I've wanted to be a Wolverine ever since I was a little boy, and I am determined to do everything in my power to transfer...I at least want something to go right for once in my life.

So, what do yall think? Will I get the rejection letter in that small envelope once again, or will I get to hold a big fat package with an acceptance letter in it?

i dont want to sound negative or anything, but i have applied to U. mich - 3.5 gpa, 5 APs, honors classes, 2030 SAT, which overall, is not a very good batch of stats themselves, but i thought it wouldve been enough - i got waitlisted.

anyways, your instate, a high college gpa is (usually) more difficult to obtain than a high highschool gpa, and im sure they would take into consideration that youve already applied before. dont let your parents get to you - my parents have compared me many times to other more "academically" oriented peers, and i merely tell them they should have had more children, then maybe one of them would have turned out to be more asian than me - anyways, good luck to you

Yeah, sorry I'd have to say UMich Ann Arbor is pretty competitive. I applied with 3.7 unweighted GPA, 32 ACT, 4 already completed APs and was working on another 6 AP courses at the time and I was still waitlisted.

hey rex-craft7 and piezor, were those your college stats or your HS stats? Right now im trying to transfer, not apply as a freshman. Even so, I think mt HS grades will bring me down significantly :(

oh, and does it help at all if you apply early? I know the application for Winter 2009 is due October, but I applied February. Considering that UM is rolling admissions, wont that help a bit?

Yeah, why is everbody posting their highschool stats to compare to Constable? I would say it still might be a reach, but you sure have a shot, especially if you can get your GPA a little higher. I say apply, and make sure you explain your illness, because that might push you over the edge.

You'd have way better chances with a 3.5. Take care of your health and see how it goes. Sorry your mother is being so unhelpful; don't let her discourage you.

My suggestion is to work really hard next semester & get the highest grades you can. Get to know AT LEAST one of your profs really well ... go to office hours!!! Once you get to know a prof well, ask for his/her honest opinion ... maybe he/she can help you.

Your high school stuff becomes less relevant the longer you are in college.

Lighten up on yourself. Do the best you can. Get a prof or two on your side. Apply to A-squared with a dynamite essay. Good luck.

i applied for fall 08 and got accepted after getting rejecting coming out of high school, but am not attending. here were my stats:
HS GPA: 3.2 (one of the top college prep schools in TX)
ACT: 27
College GPA from university of arizona: 3.5

Agree with those who say the longer you’re out of high school, the less relevant the high school GPA matters. Make it a point to cultivate a professional relationship with your professors by going to their office hours and showing interest in the course material/field.

I’d also write an addendum essay addressing the impact your medical problems had on your academic performance as that is a critical factor in explaining your record. Also, if you feel comfortable with some or all of the Profs, let them know about the medical condition which has posed severe challenges for you as they can make reference to that in their recommendations which will help your application prospects.

As for your mother, it is difficult to deal with her comparing you with your siblings…been there myself. Try to ignore her as this is your own life that you’re responsible for…not whether you’re in a pointless achievement contest between your siblings.
