Hey guys. I am a freshman at the University of North Carolina. I applied to UVa last year and was waitlisted.. and then rejected. I am in-state (from VA) The only bad part about UNC is that it costs too much and kind of far away. My first choice is still UVa, but I was wondering what I could do to improve my chances of being admitted to UVa. I have a strong HS record except for SAT's they're below average :( that was the part that held me back I think. I checked the common application today and they're essays are TOTALLY different from 1st years.. any suggestions?

How did you get WL'd by UVa as an instater yet still get into UNC? Very bizarre.

Anyway, UVA and UNC are very, very similar schools, and if it weren't for the large cost difference between them, I'd encourage you to try to stay at UNC. But if you really want to come to UVa, the best you can do at this point is get a GPA above 3.5 or so and apply for fall transfer.

yes, the cost is the only thing holding me back, thats the only reason im considering transferring... its too much and then theres graduate school.. so my parents want me to try and go instate. UNC and UVa are very similar in regards to academics, i agree. But like what should i write on my essay's? I really want to go to uva bc its cheaper?

UVa and UNC are similar in a lot more ways that academics. In your essays, try and be creative. Say you've got friends at UVa, or there's some gimmicky program you want to pursue. Or say you want to be closer to home. Whatever. If you've got good credentials, you will get in.

I just dont want to be waitlisted again- and then rejected... happend to me once dont want it to happen again... but im majoring in business and UVA is #2 in the country, i think... what other things can i say? i do have friends who go there, plus for my major, closer to home, cheaper.. how big is charlottesville?

C-Ville is pretty big. The Comm school you apply for in your second year, so you would apply to UVa College of Arts and Sciences, hopefully get in and then apply for the Comm School.

Your essays won't make or break you, but very darn close. Spend lots, and lots of time on them. Organize your thoughts and CONVINCE them that you belong here! Show interest, and you should be in a good position. Good luck :)

i hate writing essays, but i guess i have to deal with it if i really want to go to UVa... is it easier for transfers to get in than first years?

Again, I'd say your essays are second most important to grades. You need to do well on them.
And, I don't think that it was ever easier to get it, just because of the range of people applying and the limited number of spots. Now, it's definitely harder, because CC kids are guaranteed spots if they meat the transfer agreement. That means if there are 600 spots, and 500 CC kids fill them, that means there's 100 spots left for people like you. While this situation will never happen, you can see the playing field.

UVAWHOO: your a current freshman at UNC-CH? And when you apply to transfer are you doign it for the fall '09 or spring '09? I had read on UVa's website that to transfer for spring admission with less than 24 credits is not recommended.

actually might not be allowed*...idk for sure though

amy, i already have 12 hours of credit that was transferred from governors school (while i was in high school) and i am taking 16 hours right now. But i plan on transferring in the fall of '09.. so i still have some time. I just need to keep up with my grades and write pretty damn good essays

FYI: you can't transfer in for the spring semester first year, as you need 24 credits of college coursework to be able to transfer. And, if you're a sophomore/second-year, you can only transfer to the College (CLAS) and Architectural History in the A-school for spring.

hey shoebox-- is it required to send in a teacher recommendation? Because I feel like its harder to know teachers 1 on 1 in college than in high school.... If I applied last year, do they still have all my records?

I have no idea if it's required or not. Look at the application, it will tell you. I sent one in, but I had gotten a previous rec from her for a math tutoring position, so it wasn't hard. And I have no idea if they kept your stuff from last year. You should call the admissions office, or email the transfer department.

Alright so I originally had 16 hours of credit but I did not know that my AP Calc AB exam score of 3 placed me out of Math 231 (Calc 1) in UNC. So I based my placement on my Math SAT score and was placed in Math 152. But UNC says that if you have credit for Math 231 you cannot take Math 152... so today I had to drop that course... do you know if have 13 hours will affect my transfer decision? I will take 15 hours next semester. Any advice will help, and thanks for your time!

this might be sorta off topic but does anyone know the admission rate for UVa's B-school?! Because I heard its really slim for students who transfer from another college, is that true?!

It is. Google UVA historical data and search around that site for the transfers admissions numbers.
