Transferring from University of Houston to UT Austin, or UT Tyler to UT Austin??

Hello all, I am in a bit of a sticky situation and I’d like to get opinions from y’all. I was offered the CAP program at UT Tyler recently for Aerospace Engineer. However, I was also accepted into U of H for the Biotechnology Program. I read that the CAP program does not guarantee a spot at UT Austin after your Freshman year for the college of engineering. I was wondering which would be a better choice to get into UT Austin since I have no idea how the transfer stuff works. I am currently a High School Senior.

I am leaning towards U of H at this point ONLY because I know the area more since I live in Houston, but I also don’t want to waste a easy opportunity to get into UT Austin through the CAP program.

Thank you all for the input!

There is no “easy” way to get into UT Austin. From what I have heard and read, getting into Cockrell as a transfer will be quite difficult as the program is very competitive. If you are truly interested in UT Austin, you should talk to the admissions counselors about the CAP program. What we were told when my student visited Cockrell was that if you were not accepted into Cockrell as a freshman that you should take another offer at another school as you wouldn’t be able to transfer in later.

Cap’ed students almost/basically never get Engineering. UH is a good school and if you got the major you wanted, go for it - or try for engineering there.
A bit if advice: even if you live nearby, don’t commute at least your first year, live in the dorms. Students who live on campus are more involved and get better grades, plus it’s easier to make connections and you won’t waste hours each week in traffic.

So CAP doesn’t help with admission to UT Austin if you want to major in Aerospace Engineering?

NO.
