Transferring from University of Mary Washington to Virginia Tech

Hi everyone! My plan is to transfer from UMW to VT at the end of my freshmen year and start VT as a sophomore. I was wondering if there was anyone who had transferred to VT from UMW as well and could offer any advice about the process? Also one of my best friends goes to VT so my plan was to room with her next year, but does VT allow transfers and students who already are enrolled to room since the housing agreement is due before I receive my acceptance letter? Thank you!

I’m the parent of a VT freshman. Take classes this year that will transfer. You can easily look up the course requirements at VT via the internet. There are transfer groups for VA Tech on Facebook. Also there’s a Reddit page for VA Tech where you can ask questions of students.

Most students live off campus after freshman year. Sophomores have to enter a lottery to get a room and most transfers move straight into apartments. Apartments are plentiful and cheaper than dorm rates. I just figured my son’s dorm is costing $705 per month and he lives in a fairly inexpensive dorm. In October they have a housing fair for apartments for NEXT fall. Tell your friend not to sign any leases for next year this fall. There are plenty of apartments still available in July and August. She should wait to see what your plans are. You can get some idea of what’s available and costs by looking at housing on the Blacksburg Craigslist.

Hi hon. Whatever you do don’t transfer in the Spring like I’m doing. Tech doesn’t even allow Spring transfers. Kind of snotty of them to be so choosy but hey, live and let live.
