I was recently admitted to NU as a rising sophomore from UVA. I would be majoring in their Industrial Engineering program and hopefully economics as well. I applied for a Systems major at UVA in March and was planning on applying for Econ by the end of Fall 2013.

I was hoping to get some insight on whether or not it would be worth transferring.

I'm reasonably well involved at UVA- I'm on a Student Council Committee and row for the men's club crew team, among other things- and I obviously have my friends from first year. I understand that NU is well above UVA in engineering but am wondering if I'd lose a lot socially from transferring.

I also haven't pledged at UVA so I would most likely take advantage of that at NU.

Thanks

So you applied to Northwestern, completed the application, wrote the essay, compiled recommendations, and paid the application fee, and now you aren’t sure if you want to go?

Has something changed to make you unsure of the move? Why apply if you don’t want to go? Seems like an incomplete story to me. Either way, these both great schools with great students and educators – but they are different. As a (young) adult, you need to ensure that this is the right choice for you to make.

I wasn’t really enjoying UVA first semester as an OOS student and applied to transfer. I started to enjoy it more spring semester and would go back without a second thought if Northwestern’s IE program wasn’t so incredible. Also it’s proximity to Chicago is definitely an upside as I’d like to work in a city. I’m just looking for advice from someone else who’s transferred as to whether or not they were able to really integrate socially.
