Transferring from West Point to a top engineering school

I'm considering transferring at the end of next year. My schools of choice are MIT, Standford, Cal Tech, really anything with a top notch engineering program.

The bad part is that my GPA is only 3.39 after one year.

I'm hoping that the fact that I'm coming form West Point might give me a little bit of a chance.

Anybody think that I have a realistic chance?

learning a little bit about the schools other than the fact that they have top engineering programs (and none of them have a "D" in their name) would help.

with all due respect, 3.39 is wayyy too low, even if it is from WEST POINT..there is one guy in here who applied from harvard to yale, he had like a 3.3 too and he got rejected..

That's funny. You sound like my friend but in reverse. Have you considered transferring to other top-notch engineering schools like Georgia Tech or University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign?

You still have a semester to raise your GPA so try getting your GPA above a 3.5 and then you will have a shot. Also, apply to some less competitive schools if you definitely want to leave. Those schools are reaches for everyone.

dont listen to these people, they dont know what theyre talking about, a 3.39 from west point is very very good.. it is an extremely stressful place, my friend is in the af academy so i know a bit about the subject

Sorry, polska, but I respectfully disagree. Stanford, MIT, and Caltech are very unlikely to admit anyone from the service academy without a GPA of 3.6 or better--especially in engineering, which is their most competitive major.

P.S. Yes, the service academies are very demanding--but all of the top colleges are academically demanding. The only extra demands at the service academies are related to physical activities. These are not especially important to the schools you've mentioned, however.

Also, kudos and thanks to your friend for his/her willingness to perform service on behalf of the country.

polska that is just not true. An applicant with a 3.39 at any top school still has little chance to tranfer to another, unless that school as exceptional grade deflation.

West Point isn't really a top school in the same caliber as MIT Stanford or Caltech. I'm not by any means saying it's a bad school and I respect anyone who goes there because it's a big commitment and sacrifice but the admission stats for the service academies are much lower than the schools mentioned, especially in engineering.

If you would have been competitive for these schools out of high school then you have a shot but other than that I would say your chances are slim.

Calcruzer, i can agree with that and i appreciate how politely you put it! when it comes to those 3 schools its just outrageous, i dont even want to waste my time thinking about it! but i really think that if helm_103 applied for engineering at schools like cornell, columbia, and even cooper union (all very prestigious/respectable schools in ny) he would probably be able to hit one of them. being from west point gives him an interesting perspective as well.

Do you happen to know the average GPA for West Point? That might help? I believe your academic class standing goes on your transfer Dean's Report.
