Transferring From Yale

ahhh don’t do it!!! seriously, please, please, PLEASE, don’t! my boyfriend goes to cornell and was going to transfer to my school to be with me and i couldn’t let him because i’m at a state school and he’s at an ivy. seriously reconsider what you’re about to do.

The essay will be extremely important. You’ll have to convince them that school offers you something Yale does not.

what don’t you like about Yale?

btw how many transfers do they take every year? is it extremeley competitive?

uh, i do want to suggest that the OP transferring to bowdoin ISN’T the end of the world and hardly analogizes to transferring from Cornell to a state school (ironicallyunsure). my reasons for suggesting against transferring are based solely on the OP’s stated desire to be with his girlfriend and nothing more. if he had actual academic reasons, say, or disliked the people at Yale, or wanted a smaller environment, i wouldn’t discourage him, nor should he be discouraged. Yale has a tremendous reputation, but it’s hysterical to describe transferring to Bowdoin as bound to result in regret. if he transfers for reasons a person ought to transfer, and is successful, he likely won’t be regretful, so long as he’s determined that Bowdoin is a good match. again, all this is hypothetical, since the OP, in my opinion, has not done that due diligence or, even if he had, it’s colored by his ulterior motive to be with his girlfriend. so, my recommendation not to transfer still holds in this situation.

hypothetically, however, if you were a student who had a genuine interest in transferring for the right reasons, you would need to convincingly state those reasons in your essay. probably meeting with people in the admissions office face to face is a smart idea. finally bowdoin, because of its retention rate, is a formidable place to send a transfer application, even from yale, so you might try and have this conversation only if you get in. i’m not sure what they look for in a transfer student, but note that they’ll likely be able to sniff out insincerity or inappropriate reasons for a transfer application if they exist.

Thanks to all
