Transferring High Schools Junior Year?

I know I'm not a parent, but I need help. I am currently a sophomore at a magnet school. The academics are superb, but there are hardly any sports. Also, they do not offer early childhood education, a class I am very interested in taking. I have few friends I actually hang out with on a regular basis at this school. I am not happy in general. Before, this school I always went to a "normal" public school. I would like to transfer to a local public high school for my junior year. This school offers the IB program, which I would enroll in as I currently take many AP classes and have a 4.0 gpa. Also, this school offers early childhood education. Two of my best friends go to this school so I would at least know someone on the first day of school. I have talked to the guidance counselor and did my research carefully. The bad side is that the chemistry and French classes are not as challenging as the ones I am taking now. I also run cross country so I would always make some new friends over the summer at practices before school starts in August. I already go to this schools football, basketball, and baseball games. At my current school I am in the middle percentage of my class. At this new school I would most likely be in the top 10%. Should I switch schools or not? And for what reason(s)? Also, does switching schools look bad on college applications?

You have a 4.0 and are in the middle of your class?? Are you sure your school is challenging and not just inflating grades or is that a weighted GPA? What is your unweighted GPA?

Are you able to participate in sports if you transfer? In our state you would have to sit out a year. Something to consider.

How many AP classes have you taken and which ones? Have you researched the IB program and understand the workload involved? IB and AP are pretty much considered the same thing for college admissions so if your GPA will suffer in the IB program because of the enormous workload, you may what to stick with the AP’s. Just a suggestion.

I’ve never heard of a HS offering a class like that. That is usually a college major.

My son switched schools as a junior and is so much happier. He is just finishing his junior year, so I can’t say for sure how colleges will view it. All I know is that his GPA has really increased. He will not apply to any of our state colleges, so I doubt most colleges will know that he went from a very competitive school to a less competitive school.

Erins Dad: My school offers early childhood education, known as “preschool lab”, where they actually have preschoolers come in. Each student gets a preschooler and they teach them things. The students also learn how preschoolers develop, learn, interact and other stuff. This is a public school too.

Yes. My school is ranked as one of the top 20 schools in the nation. That is my unweighted gpa. I will be able to participate in sports as long as I am on jv for my junior year. I can be on varsity my senior year. I have taken AP world history,AP human geography, AP english, and AP chemistry. I have researched the IB program. I understand the workload involved. Also, at this school early childhood education gives you 30 semester hours for a state school if you take it for two years in a row.
