Transferring History Major only 2 history classes done

Hey everyone

i am applying in fall 2014 to UCLA from SMC and I was wondering if I only have 2 history classes complete (History 12, History 34) by the end of Fall 2014, will that make my chances of getting into UCLA lower?

I will have completed 5 scholars classes and be scholars certified and will have IGETC done as well.
My GPA will hopefully be good. I cant tell what will happen in the future, but I am aiming to have no gpa lower than a 3.7.
I think I will have a 3rd history class done in winter 2014, will that be okay?

I’m looking at the assist page, which has 3 classes listed as major prereqs. If you did take 2 history classes, make sure they are listed on the page.

http://web1.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=SMCC&ria=UCLA&ia=SMCC&oia=UCLA&aay=13-14&ay=13-14&dora=HIST

2/3 prereqs completed is good, but this is History, which is an impacted major and highly competitive. If you completed the 3rd one by winter 2014 and noted your grades on the TAU, you should be a competitive candidate assuming your GPA is above 3.7

So are you saying I should be good if I complete the last history class in Winter 2014 and it wouldnt make a difference then?

@fapel100‌

If you can get a 3rd history class completed in Winter 2014, that will be great. UCLA will definitely take notice of that as they take into consideration all updates made until March even though they release decisions April.

Try to get at least three history classes done by Winter and you should be fine. Good luck!

history is impacted at ucla? where can I find this info?

All the majors listed with an asterisk are impacted

@mr401k‌

https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Majors/lsmajor.htm

This is a list of all of UCLA’s majors in the College of Letters and Science. It states which majors are impacted and not impacted. It’s worth noting, however, that not all impacted majors are equally impacted. History is technically impacted at UCLA, but it’s not ridiculously difficult to get into, as biology or psychology are. It’s only somewhat impacted.

is getting into ucla as a transfer mainly based off gpa?

Also, look at the admit rate % for your major and if it’s anything less than 30%, I’d say it should be considered “impacted.”

Maybe impacted isn’t the right word…Difficult? Let’s go with that. Anything under 30% admittance is a difficult major to get into or the applicants who applied had no business applying in the first place. Take a look at Central and East European Lang/Cultures. It has 0% admittance, but only 1 applied and he had a 2.36 GPA.

@fapel100‌

The most important factors for admission consideration to UCLA are GPA, major GPA, and pre-req completion. Extracurriculars and personal statement don’t matter as much, but they seem to have gotten a little more important this year, so who knows?

I think the PS matters more if a person has special experiences, and no, I’m not talking about people that are generic all star varsity players, cheerleaders, and president of the galaxy club. Special experiences such as being a foster youth, experiencing extreme adversities such as a Tsunami devastating your home, experiencing disabilities such as blindness, etc.

one more question,

does it matter if you turn in your application first or turn it in last?

I am a history major that has been accepted to UCLA myself. I only took 2 history courses for the first year and a half of community college. I didn’t even take any history courses last fall and I am taking my last 2 right now. So I only had 2/4 done by the time I applied to UCLA.

Listen to @OcaptnMyCaptn. He’s TAP-certified and he knows what he’s talking about. I think things will go well for you, @fapel100.

And no, it doesn’t matter when you turn in your application as long as you turn it in before the deadline. I submitted mine a few days before the deadline and I’ve been accepted to every school I applied to so far.

@fapel100

It doesn’t matter. I applied very late in November and I still got into all of the UC’s I applied to.

@OcaptnMyCaptn if you dont mind me asking, what was your gpa when u applied?

@fapel100 Sure,

3.63 UC GPA
4.00 Major GPA
Tap certified (3 out of the 4 history classes I have taken were honors courses)
IGETC completed

I am absolutely positive that you will have a great chance of getting in if you get a 3.7+ with all of your prereqs completed. I was worried that UCLA would reject me for taking my last 2 prereqs this spring.

do u think it matters if the history classes i took are not honors?

I can only imagine that taking honors courses for history would help you, but I don’t think it will hurt your chances either if you don’t take history honors classes. I have seen a couple of guys get accepted for history in the decisions thread who are not in the honors program at all.

p.s. It gave me a little something more to write about on my personal statement aha ;:wink:

@fapel100‌ I’ve been accepted to both UCSB and UCSD (Still waiting on UCB) for their History major, and I was never involved in any of the honors programs. I did receive an A in all the history related courses.
