Transferring, How Much Does Major Matter?

So long story short, I am currently a first year in college at a fairly respectable school. As a senior, I was interested in applying to CMU, but due to circumstance I decided not to. However, I regret that decision and am considering applying as a transfer student, but I hear that the selectivity of CMU varies widely depending on your major. Right now, I am considering applying as either an English or Economics major. I would prefer to enter as an economics major, but enrolling as an English major would still be a vast improvement from the status quo right now. I'm not sure which major I should apply to. Intuitively, I'd think that English majors would have an easier time being accepted, but I am not sure. CMU says to apply as an economics major in H&SS just like English majors, and I can't find statistics detailing acceptances by major. Academically, I would be competitive for admission into H&SS, but definitely nothing guaranteed, and considering how much I want to go to CMU, I would rather not take chances. Also, could someone enlighten me as to the difficulty of switching majors at CMU?

Switching majors within H&SS is not difficult at all. You could probably switch almost immediately. Are you sure that you apply for a certain major and automatically get into it through transfer? I’m in H&SS and know that we actually had to stay undeclared until second semester of freshmen year. So even though I wrote about what majors I was interested in I wasn’t bound to them by any means and don’t believe that had anything to do with my acceptance into H&SS.
