Transferring. I need some advice.

<p>Hello everyone,</p>

<p>This is my second thread on CC. I need some advice on how to transfer in to a university. This advice is however for a nephew of mine, who refuses to make an account because he is stuck up with studies. </p>

<p>He is currently attending a 4 year university in Minnesota (which I might add is not so highly ranked). </p>

<p>Although he has had a very low High school performance, his performance in his university has been very good. His stats are as follows :- </p>

<p>University info:-

[li]Current course- Mechanical Engineering<br>[/li][/ul]</p>

<p>High school:-

[<em>]3.0 GPA
[</em>]SAT - 620 M , 480 CR --> Taken in HS

<p>Current performance:-

[<em>]3.9 GPA
[</em>]Currently a Sophomore (he plans to transfer as a Junior)<br>
[<em>]Dean's list
[</em>]Offered instate tuition fee and many other scholarships (he is practically attending the university for free)
[<em>]Top 1%
[</em>]Core Curriculum
[<em>]Research work with professors
[</em>]Learned to play Football and Lacrosse (he is also on the respective teams)<br>

<p>Current List:-

[</em>]University of Michigan - Ann Arbor<br>
[<em>]University of Wisconsin
[</em>]University of California - LA
[<em>]University of California - Berkeley

<p>What do you think will his chances be with his current statistics ?. Which all universities do you think he will be able to get into?. Also, what can he do to improve his chances ?. </p>

<p>Is he a recruitable athlete? Is he prerpared to pay in full as the UCs, Wisconsin and UMich will expect him to?</p>

<p>For Dartmouth and NU, he should retake the SATs.</p>

<p>He looks like a strong candidate for schools that don’t require the SAT.</p>

saying there’s not hope for financial aid at all?</p>

<p>Yes, no hope for aid OOS now beyond the Federal and cost if over $50K/yr.</p>

<p>@Redroses - Which schools do not look at test scores while transferring ? (in general) </p>

<p>Also, Which schools from the above list do not care much about the SAT’s ?</p>

<p>SATs won’t matter if he’s applying as a junior transfer (maybe they’ll matter for ivy league). With a 3.9 I don’t see why Wisconsin wouldn’t accept him. Plus with the agreement they have with Minnesota residents he won’t be paying full OOS tuition.</p>

<p>SATs absolutely matter at schools that want them.</p>

<p>the UCs don’t look at SATs and he’d be a strong candidate at them. I’m guesssing the other state schools also don’t but that’s just a guess. Some schools at Cornell don’t ask for them. For the other ivies such as Dartmouth they are very important.</p>

<p>You might want to post on the UC Transfers subforum for Cal and UCLA, I wonder if ME is an impacted major, and if so, how difficult it is to transfer into it. I personally don’t think they’re worth the money for an OOS student, particularly with the budget crunch they’re having, but that’s a personal decision between the student and their family.</p>
