Hey, I’m thinking of possibly transferring into Brown. It seems as though Brown is very liberal about what’s required for transfer. In fact, it says that a high school transcript and test scores are “optional.” How true is that? What if I were to only submit my test score (36 ACT) and my college transcript (an extremely hopeful and tentative 4.0)? Has anyone been able to transfer doing so?

Not sure about your last question, but with a perfect GPA and ACT, transferring may just be within your grasp.

Hope so!

Bump

I am guessing that if you are applying in your freshman year as a sophomore transfer, so that your college transcript is only one semester, then Brown would like to see your HS transcript. This might not be an issue if you are “laterally” transferring (from an Ivy/equivalent). It also would help if you had some superlative recs from college profs who seem to know you well, if the HS background isn’t there. If you are looking to transfer as an entering Junior then college courses and grades should be fine (and more important by far than your HS grades.)

well I also intend to transfer, so I would like to ask, what kind of schools would you define as “lateral”? Would Wesleyan Univ, haverford, bowdoin or Vassar be seen as inferior or just as lateral?(I got into these schools this year but am still obsessed with Brown, which deferred and then denied me so…I really don’t know whether I am just not good enough or something…)

Wesleyan and Bowdoin would be lateral schools.

I would consider all those schools to be nearly lateral.

In the past few years I have known more than one student who did not get into Brown and did get into Vassar. Same for Wesleyan. Of students I know who applied to Brown and Haverford, one actually got into Brown, and wait-listed at Haverford, and one got into Haverford and not Brown. Of course this is a small sample and all for regular admission. Transfer stats may be different, as I don’t know the number of transfer slots these schools have and Brown seems to have quite a few (particularly in proportion to the number of applicants, compared to undergrad admissions.)

The Brown transfer application instructions do say: “Please have an official transcript from your graduating high school sent to our attention.” If there is any confusion, ask them.

You need to send both transcripts, but test scores are quasi optional. If you needed to take the SAT/ACT to get into your current school, Brown would like to see the scores. I did not take either test and was admitted as a transfer, but high school transcripts are definitely required. It is a good idea to send the final report as well.

if your test scores are good, by all means, send them in.

the “optional” clause is for people who didn’t have proper access to them or for whatever reason not reflecting their intelligence or potential did very poorly.

Also, I second sending in a spring final / mid term report.
