Hello everyone, I just finished my first semester at the University of Texas at Dallas. I have 28 hours completed and have a 3.40 GPA as a political science major. UT-Austin is and has always been my dream school and I am desperate to go there.
Questions:
Am I eligible to transfer for the Spring 2016 semester?
Also, what are my chances of getting in?
thank you.
Are you a CAP student? If so a 3.2 is enough to get you in. If not you need to raise your GPA by another .2 - .3 points to be competitive. You would be eligible to apply for the Spring 2016 semester given that you were in completion of more than 30 hours prior to transferring, so I’m assuming you’re taking at least 2 hours next semester which would make you eligible :P. Despite this, I would suggest taking a class this summer to put you over 30 hours, since priority is given to applications with 30 hours already completed when you send in your first transcript next semester. Try your best to increase your GPA as much as possible since the average for admittance into COLA is a 3.6-3.7.
Thank you for the useful information @danfer91
No, I’m not a CAP student. I probably should have accepted the offer, but I foolishly went to UTD anyway (as opposed to CAP at UT-Tyler).
I might take a class at Austin Community College this summer. Do you think it is worth it? Is there a huge difference between 28 and 30? I guess you’ve answered that question in a way, lol.
Also, is it okay to apply for Spring 2016, get rejected, and then try to apply for Fall of 2016? I guess I could apply for Spring and hope that I get lucky with my 3.4 gpa and try again with a (hopefully) improved GPA the next semester if you’re allowed to do that.
Also, does it make any difference that I’m at a 4 year institution, specifically the UT system’s second best school?
Unfortunately the institution you attend seems to make no difference. A 3.7 from a community college seems to perform the same as a person with a 3.7 from A&M. The only way your school will really make a difference is if you are in the CAP program.
And yes there is a pretty large difference between 28 and 30 hours. 30 hours is what is required to transfer so with 30 hours already completed your application is given priority and reviewed before peoples with less than 30.
Also it’s perfectly fine to apply for the Fall semester, you just might not want to take more than 60 hours at UTD before you apply since that can be detrimental. Your application could very well get accepted for the Spring semester, though the chances would be much better with a 3.6-3.7. Try to get as many A’s (a 4.0 if you can) as possible these next two semester and I would think you have a pretty decent shot next Fall with an upward trend and a good PS.
Hey, thanks for the informative replies. It seems pretty clear to me now.
I ended up getting in, for those curious. Had a near perfect fall semester and sent my grades in.
