I am highly considering University of Illinois. I want to major in computer science but the engineering school is not an option for freshman admission for me, it is far too selective given my cumulative GPA and ACT. Still, as a senior in high school I am an A honors math, honors physics student so I know that I can succeed in a technical subject. So, my option is to transfer into engineering after one year. I would like to hear from a University of Illinois student who has done this or anyone with knowledge on it, how difficult it is to transfer, and what the criteria is; the website is very vague. Thanks.

Are you an Illinois resident?

Several community Colleges have auto-admit programs into College of Engineering at UIUC.

I am an Illinois resident. I would want to attend UIUC as a freshman anyway, I just can’t as a computer science major.

I am not a UIUC student, however I did go to their open house and talked one of their professors about something similar to this(people transferring from their LAC school to the engineering school).

Long story short, transferring is extremely hard. There are only a set amount of seats in each engineering class and the people that have those seats don’t plan on giving them up. Your best bet is to apply to UIUC as a freshmen and have your spot reserved.

If your grades/test scores are as low as you say(Below a 28/3.0) then I recommend applying to the LAC school and getting a CS degree through there(it’s more or less the same curriculum but you just don’t have the COE stickied onto it).

Check this out and note the “NEW” minimum transfer requirements. Also note that these requirements are neither a guaranty nor are they guaranteed not to change.
