Transferring into Olin

Hey all,
I was just admitted into the Arts and Sciences college at WUSTL, but I have recently come upon an interest in business and think that I want to transfer into the Olin Business School. Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer into the Olin school from another school at Wash U and, if it is possible, what needs to be done to complete the transfer?

Yes, it’s very easy to transfer from ArtSci to Business. I don’t know the exact procedure because I’ve never switched colleges, but I believe it’s as simple as filling out a form and getting it signed by your advisor.

You can actually switch long before getting to washu, which would be beneficial to take advantage of bschool registration & getting a bschool advisor.

How can I switch before I get to WashU?

Have you gotten your WUSTL key yet? If not, I think you’ll get it sometime during the summer. You can change your major/division on WebSTAC.

Is it better to study business or economics at washu? I’m worried that getting an undergrad business degree wouldn’t be as door-opening since it’s such a specific field of knowledge and seen as an easier path. Which would be better if I wanted to eventually get a Ph.D in Econ or finance?

You can go for the econ/finance PhD with either bschool or artsci (or hell, I know a systems engineer who only minored in finance that is now getting a finance phd at ucla).

Also, for the record, you can also major in econ in the bschool.

Do note - as much as people like to make fun of bschoolers & it doesn’t have the best reputations at other schools, the average starting salary for washu bschool students is >$70k. That’s not half bad, imo, if you decide not to go the graduate study route.

I was an engineering student, but I’m really a big fan of the non-art sci schools in general. Nothing against artsci, but being in a smaller program (ie Olin) has a lot of advantages & can (in many situations) offer you more support. Also, Olin has it’s own career center (for both graduate study & traditional jobs) which I’ve heard is absolutely fantastic.

I am starting in September and registered in the school of arts and sciences. I think I eventually want to transfer into the business school. Can I take the intro management courses MGT100 and 150A prior to officially changing my major. I am not sure if they are available to non business majors. It says above that you can change before starting but I was told you have to apply once you are there. Any advice would be appreciated.

I’d like to correct Johnson181 that the starting salary statistics for Olin is very skewed. Unless you pursue Investment Banking (which pays over $100k), you should expect to make more around $50k or $60k right out of college, which is still not bad at all for a job fresh out of school.

As far the b-school goes, if your intent is to find a good job after school, it’s a good way to go because the courses are intentionally made to be easier to get an A because the Olin faculty put getting work experience as first priority. That being said, you should also pursue something else like a Math or Comp sci 2nd major/minor to make yourself stand out more. But if you think that’s too tough, forget about it, because simply having the 4.0 GPA (Or as high as possible) is all that matters.

And yes Olin has its own career center and while it’s better than the other one for the rest of the school, I wouldn’t recommend you relying on it at all. From personal experience, I will tell you that they will not add much value to you (Sometimes they were even actually detrimental, but that’s probably because they just don’t like me :P).
