Transferring into UCSD Engineering?

I'll be attending a CC in 2 years but I just need someone to clear this up for me.

Can I transfer into UCSD for a major in Electrical Engineering or is that impossible. On the transfer site it says that to transfer into engineering you need to choose an alternate major because it is impacted. Does this mean that if I get rejected for engineering I have to major in something else? Also wouldn't this mean that I would have to take extra classes to make sure I can get into both majors?

Last question... How much studying do UCSD students have to do compared Cal students? How much competition is there?

Bump(10 char)

Anyone?! Come on :(

Yeah, the major is impacted but that doesn’t mean you can’t apply. When you choose an alternate major you will most likely be choosing another engineering major which you meet the qualifications for. For example, I applied as ECE:Electrical Engineering and alternately chose CSE:Computer Engineering as an alternate major. Because the requirements are nearly identical, I had the prerequisites for both.

In terms of competition check the statfinder website to see what kind of GPAs the admitted transfer students (not applicants) have. This should give you a good idea of how hard your peers will work.

FYI - accepted into UCSD Revelle for Electrical Engineering Fall 2009.

Alright, I’ll help you out. I am a Chemical Engineer major and could possibly be attending UCSD in the fall so I’ll answer what I can. I haven’t seen anywhere that states you are required to choose an alternate major, basically they are just informing you that since the major is impacted it will be more difficult to get accepted, but you should be just fine if you work hard enough and finish all of your pre-reqs prior to transfer (ucsd also offers a TAG agreement which you should definitely look into). Also,it is very possible to transfer to EE.

As far as being rejected from engineering and majoring in something else, I’m assuming you are under the pretense that if you put down an alternate major they will consider you for that major instead of your first? This, I am not so sure of. I would not bank on the fact that you will be accepted for an alternate major though, especially for engineering because there are so many major specific pre-reqs to finish. Generally from what I have heard most people do not get accepted for their alternate major and some schools, like UCLA, won’t even consider your alternate(unless you are TAP of course). Oh, and another thing, I am 99% sure that you cannot apply for a major like psychology (in the college of letters and sciences) and switch to engineering after you’re accepted.

As far as the course comparison is concerned, I cannot help you there. I’m a CCC transfer.

^^ yeah most colleges state that you cannot change your major into many of the popular ones after being accepted for another

Hey James,
im a EE transfer student to UCSD, i just got accepted from a community college last week so im pretty excited. anyway it is very doable as i did it as well as my friend. UCSD is rea;;y good school for that major and so you better keep a pretty decent gpa. plus go to the site ww.assist.org and see all the classes u need to take for your major. you better have all of them done by the time you wana transfer to maximize your chances. also since ucsd requires the same lower division GE classes (depending on what college you get into) then you might as well follow the igetc so you can finish that off as well. i got in with a 3.5 gpa and all work done as well as army background and some other bonuses like tutoring at my cc for physics. hope this was helpful. if u put a backup major it could be related to EE like applied physics or something that has very similar prereqs.
