transferring, joining a fraternity

anybody know what the first step to joining a fraternity as a transfer student is to a UC school? Can you join at all? Anybody have cost estimates for something like that? Thanks

You can join just like anyone else would - they welcome transfers of all ages. Just recruit, either formally in the fall, or informally in the spring. It depends on the UC, but if you live at the fraternity house, living costs and fraternity dues can cost anywhere from 5-10k a school year. My boyfriend, at the time, transferred to Berkeley and joined a fraternity and it was a great experience for him.

I am also interested in joining a frat this fall as a transfer, but I keep hearing how much time it requires from its members, and I am afraid this might hurt my academics. Is this true? Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much time I must devote to the frat? I know rush (or pledge?) week will probably be pretty hectic, but after that, is there alot of stuff that I am required to do (volunteer, set-up events, etc.)?
Thanks a lot,
Kyle

True, fraternities can take up some time (especially during rush, even after you're done pledging), but no more so than any other EC that you'd get involved with while in school. As far as hurting your academics goes, after pledging I found that my grades actually went up. In addition to developing better time management skills, but I also gained access to the combined resources of the chapter and its members. Just be mindful of which fraternity you end up pledging and what their expectations are of you during your pledging process. As for a rough estimate of the time you'll commit...a couple hours a week to selling them your soul. Most of the chapters on my campus expect their members to at least attend an hour long weekly meeting, complete 10 hrs. of community service each semester, and participate in some capacity in rush. Here again, I'd suggest asking the fraternities you're interested in to know for sure. Regardless its a good idea to keep in mind that you get out of the fraternity what you put into it. Hope this helps.

it seems frats have developed a reputation that they are more expensive than on-campus and traditional off-campus living. That may be true, I'm not sure but if it only costs 5-10k a year that would agree with the estimated costs of "Room & Board" on the UC websites. So its possibly going to cost around the same??? Regarding grades, I've heard fraternities generally have a higher average GPA than the campus average. Hopefully this is due to the caliber of people in it and not other "unethical" reasons. Sounds like a good idea so far though. Anyone have any insight about specific frats at UCLA?

I don't know. The person I know lives in one of the most expensive frats and pays around 9000 a school year (not including summer vacation and such). I know sorieties are only about 6-8k. I don't know how it is at all UC's, I'm just talking about Berkeley. Generally living in a greek house is cheaper than living in dorms.

This is all very good information, and I have one more question. Are you required to live in the frat house if you join a fraternity that has their own place? I wouldn't think that they could make you live with them, but don't know.
Thanks again,
Kyle

fraternities are for insecure little boys

Congrats! You just made the most imbecilic post I've seen on this board! What type of person reads and responds to posts that don't interest them? Wait, we just found out....thanks for the help, though...

WAIT! Hold on......everyone check this out!

I quote student4u

"No, what should speak volumes is the fact that you Bruins can't stop hanging off our Trojan balls. All you guys do 24/7 is hate on us. Do you feel threatened? Or haven't you guys got anything better to do than talk about us?"

The FIRST topic I find from "student4u"...Sounds a little like insecurity to me. Actually it sounds like crying. Little kids cry quite a bit. Maybe message board groupie's are insecure little boys/girls....just a thought. Amazing that people can be so hypocritical. Now shut your mouth and stop being arrogant.

Oh and are you a cheerleader at USC? Sure sounds like it....

well it seems like youre the only one who's taking my comment to the extreme, which makes me question your psychological state. But to answer you're question, no, i'm not a cheer leader. But perhaps you are, as only girls take a simple comment to heart.

hahahahahaha

anyway. no you don't have to live in the fraternity house if you join. many people will go greek but still live in the dorms, or off campus. you will still have to pay dues each month. the cost isn't too steep, but varies.

Hm...sounds like chauvinistic ignorance to me......seems like you have a lot of great qualities. How about we leave this thread to people interested in the topic?

sounds like a deal to me
