I applied for Computer engineering but was put into division of general studies. Im set to major in comp engineering, what are usually the requirements of moving majors?

The base requirement is a 3.0 gpa, I believe, but be warned: transferring into engineering is very tough and not at all guaranteed. A 3.0 is the minimum, but ideally you’d want like a ~3.8 to get into your program. If you’re heart is set on compe, then there’s definitely a risk present in going to dgs. It’s up to you to decide whether you’re willing to take it, I guess.

But wouldn’t this not count as transferring a major?

Since im in general studies, doesnt that mean im undecided? Don’t i have the chance to declare comp. engineering as my major after sophmore year? (or whenever they let students declare major)

Thanks for the response btw.

If you applied to UIUC as Computer Engineering and they admitted you as General Studies, that means that you have to “apply” internally for the major you want. it is not a sure thing and as was stated by others, it is hard to get into Engineering in general. The Admission office should be able to give you statistics.

If you are set on engineering, do you have other options?

You have to take the same classes that ECE students take, and maintain a very good GPA in order to have a chance to transfer. You don’t just declare as has been previously said, you apply, and your chances of being accepted as a transfer in any given year depend on how many openings are available due to out-transfers, and how your grades stack up against others wishing to transfer in.

It’s very difficult to transfer majors at U of I. It depends on if there are openings and if you qualify stacked against everyone else who wants to transfer in. It does not allow for any freshman adjustment in grades. If you were accepted into engineering at another school, I’d do that.

What exactly am i majoring in when i do general studies? Liberal arts?

Also, is computer science a part of the engineering program, or is it seperate. I just want to pursue computers; whether its C.S or C.E

Computer Science is apart of both LAS and Engineering when you go in as undecided you’ll basically be talking all the same classes as the specific major you want to be in. You’ll need to be able to pull of Atleast a 3.4 gpa or higher all A’s and B’s in science, math and CS core classes. Yes it’s possible to transfer over but it’s definitely not something everyone can do though. Only about 100 students a year successfully transfer (ict) into the engineering department
