Hi everyone, I am currently a biochemistry and premed first-year at Smith College and I am thinking about transferring college, but I am not exactly sure I should.

First of all, I want to transfer for academic reasons. Before I came to Smith, I wasn't sure what I want to major in, but now I am pretty sure I am going to be a biochem major and I want to transfer to a school that is stronger in biochemistry than Smith. I understand that Smith has a good reputation in the sciences, but it is still better at the humanities that it is in the sciences.

Secondly, social life here at Smith really isn't my scene. I am a city girl, I grew up in Hong Kong, and really want to be closer to a city. I found Northampton kinda boring, and I feel really suffocated all the time. I also feel like there would be more job opportunities in a city. Another thing is the clicks here at Smith, I found that the housing system is so easy for clicks to form and I feel like I don't belong to any one of these clicks.( I don't think that is mine problem, I get involve! I am the secretary of a club and a member of several other clubs.)Then, the weekends are all about partying to meet some weird guys from around, I am really bored of it.

I like the small class sizes here, but sometimes I just get so bored because I feel like i know everyone already because the school is so small! I am confused, I don't know what to do. I like this school but at the same time I really don't. Do you guys think I have a valid reason to transfer? When I tell some of my friends here that I want to transfer, they all think that I have stupid reasons.. I don't know what to do, please help?

If you guys do think I should transfer, where should I transfer to? (for biochem, premed programs, a school that is close to the city)...

I'm not sure about their specific biochem programs, but, like Smith, they're good schools with solid reps + are in cities:

NYU
Columbia
Barnard
Georgetown

They're all larger than Smith, so you're more likely to meet different kinds of people and have more things to do. Barnard is all-girl, like Smith, but you didn't mention that as being a problem.

Thanks for the replies. Isleboy, I thought about taking classes at the other colleges, but I found them hard to fit in my schedule because I have long labs that takes up a lot of time, and it takes about 50 minutes to go to amherst on a bus..so it is not too much of a help for me.

ivyleaf, thanks for the suggestions, I was actually thinking about columbia, barnard and tufts ( because I love boston). I know columbia is almost impossible to get in as a transfer (acceptance rate < 10%), and barnard is also hard to get in, so I was thinking about transferring to tufts, but I am not sure about my chances because I got rejected as a senior. Would it look bad on me if I applied again? Also, does anyone know more about its biochemistry major, social life, etc?

Firstyr: It would not look bad if you applied again. If you have good grades, ECs at Smith, you're only a stronger candidate. I'm a senior at Tufts, the social life is good -- not crazy like at a state school or even BU or anything but probably a little better than at Smith, I'd guess. :-) All pre-med, natural science departments are very strong. Good luck!

I am just wondering if there are any other smithies out there that feels the same way I do? Because the majority of people I met here loves this college..
