I have applied to transfer this year and was wondering about this.

Are you crazy?

for wanting to leave?

cal is a great place and school, but it is not for everyone

Cal is not for everyone. As long as your stats (GPA, ECs, and essays) are competitive, you can transfer to where ever you want.

My “transfer-class” to Georgetown had a Cal student; he turned down Harvard for GU.

Oh ****, we got a bad ass over here.

There’s a lot of college confidential drama going on in the Berkeley section lol

check out this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1484651-how-my-berkeley-experience-landed-me-loony-bin-real-student-experience.html

^ I tried to read all of that and could not finish it. The differences between high school and colleges are staggering. This youngster could not adjust quickly enough so his experience was terrible.

I have a few friends at Berkeley. They say it’s not so bad so experience may vary.

LOL Waterox, I tried reading it too. For a minute there, 1/10th down the 1st post, I thought I had ADHD, but unfortunately it was just his writing style and the length. I skimmed everything else. I feel bad for the guy. He had a lot of expectations go south on him. And I agree that everyone’s experience will be different.

But his statements about extreme competition for the few “As” mirror what my transfer-mate said as well. When I told my transfer-mate I turned down Cal for GU, he kept shaking his head and kept repeating “You don’t want to go there.”

@ghiblijiang
He turned down Harvard because GU was his dream school. And although Cal and GU are not that far off in “prestige”, and can’t compare to the prestige-gap of Harvard and Cal, colleagues are always shocked when I tell them I turned down down UCLA and Cal for GU!

@SFS how long ago did you transfer?

i think that post makes cal much worse than it actually is. sure, it’s really bad for some kids, but for the majority it’s great. my situation is not that extreme and has nothing to do with that thread, just looking for something new

^ I transferred few years back. But I’m very familiar with GU’s admission’s since I had work-study there during 1 EA and RD application season. I left the office right before the transfer applications were processed though.

I’m more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Since you don’t have sufficient posts for PMs, you can send me a “Visitor Message”.

Regarding this post thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1484651-how-my-berkeley-experience-landed-me-loony-bin-real-student-experience.html

IMO, that guy just seemed really sheltered and wasn’t prepared for a typical college environment. Nothing he described seemed all that exceptional to me nor that specific just to Berkeley. Crappy freshmen dorms, harder classes, increased competition, breaking up with his HS GF, annoying RAs / roommates, bad parking, tuition hikes, weeder lower divs, etc. all extremely typical and cliche. He spends a great deal of time whining about things that likely would have been issues for him any where he would’ve gone, at least any UC. In my opinion the only things of note were how bad crime is in the surrounding area outside of campus and just how extreme the political environment up there is at Berkeley, and the latter really shouldn’t be that surprising. That’s really it.

Apparently, the politics are not like that of decades ago. Even the conservative [CollegeGuide.org - Home](http://www.collegeguide.org) lists Berkeley’s political environment as yellow (the grade between green (conservative) and red (left leaning)).

^^ would have to agree with that assessment
