Transferring out of UVA

Hi everyone,

I am currently a first year at UVA – I went to high school in NY. Although UVA is a great school – the professors are absolutely fantastic and there are great resources for business and pre-med students – but I feel like it is just not the right fit for me in terms of culture, location, and resources for my major. I don’t know of anyone who transferred out of UVA, and not many people at all who have successfully transferred universities. I also feel that there are not many resources here for students who try to transfer out of UVA, and so I am not sure exactly where to start or what materials I need to gather.

Has anyone on CC transferred out of UVA recently? Or transferred out of any university? Come essay submission time, who should you go to for essay editing help?

Thanks a lot everyone

Can I ask why you’re transferring from UVA? Its one of my top choices to transfer into from Emory

@johnpfc3 can I ask why you’re transferring from Emory?

What is your major? are you looking to trade up (say to one of the places that you didn’t get into last year?)

I’m not thinking of a way to say this without sounding snarky, but why do you think that a college should spend money on creating resources to help students who want to leave?!

Navigating transferring is basically college admissions all over again. Every college has a section on their specific requirements, and the deadlines are different, but in general it’s your HS transcript and SAT/ACT, your college transcript, LoRs, and an essay about why you want to transfer to that college. There are some places that don’t accept transfers (eg, Princeton), some you can’t apply to until you are in your second year, and a fair few accept spring transfers. A small number (incl Harvard) emphasize that you have to make the academic case for why you should be there.

@johnpfc3 Why are you leaving Emory? I am also a first-year.

@NeuroDude @crystalwaters23 In short, I think the finance program is not as reputable as I thought it would be. It is a very expensive school and there really is too much on the liberal arts aspect, rather than getting a good job after graduation. There is also virtually no school spirit (which I knew coming in) and my friends and I go to Georgia Tech games, instead of Emory sports since pride for Emory is essentially non-existent. The school is small and has poor name recognition (people in my hometown did not know what Emory was) and the college “town” is suffocating with few options to eat or do stuff around the area, which makes weekends boring save for a few frat parties. I could go on and go into more detail if you want to know more.
