Student wins several outside scholarships, and the checks are sent directly from the awarding organizations to the student's choice, school A. Later, student gets off the waitlist of school B and opts to attend there instead. Of course, he forfeits the deposit sent to A, but could he also lose the outside money? Or will college A be nice and send it on to college B?

I posted this question on another thread, but forget where...sorry.

are the checks already sent or did you just specify school A on your scholarship finalist notification? some scholarships dont actually send the checks til a little later

No, for now this discussion is partly hypothetical. My S did win the scholarships, but hasn't gotten off any waitlist yet. The organizations whose scholarships he already won require him to return a form by May 5 with the name of the school he plans to attend. I don't know when the actual check would be sent, though. But maybe he could talk to them and ask if they'd mind waiting a little? But other scholarships already required that he give the name of the school as part of the application, along with the contact information for the financial aid officer at that school. I imagine they want to check that he isn't getting a full ride already and has unmet need.

My concern was if a student says "yes" he's coming, and then backs out to take a waitlist offer, that the first school would be under no obligation to return the funds.

i don't think you have to worry. our experience has been that the scholarships aren't sent until the organization receives proof of enrollment from the school the student attends. most require that the college sign the form they provide. some may accept a copy of classes or of housing assiognment. most of my d's were not sent to the college until october/november (she started august 24). all are transferable.
