transferring q's

Hey guys, i have some questions.
do you know when one is supposed to transfer?
Like do ppl who end up at a school thats not their first choice, do they transfer after 2 years(60 credits) or less than 2 years, like first yr?
Because im thinking i will end up at a safety school, but im planning on transferring later on to the reach school, when should one transfer?

Some ppl tell me transfer asap, is that possible? Dont you need to build up your college resume at the safety school if your at one?

At Caltech they have told me you would basically need to start over if you stay for two years, so that would mean someone who is supposed to graduate in class of 09 would graduate in class of 10?

What are the statistics for acceptance of transfers for mit? Should I match up the curriculum offered at mit the first two years at my other school, while im in the process of transferring?

For transfers, do they need to take the SAT, etc as well?
Is there anything we should do during college, i.e. science fairs, olympiads, study abroad to increase our chances?

If I can recall correctly, MIT takes VERY FEW transfer students. Not many students drop out, leaving few slots to fill up.

Caltech has more slots due to its comparatively high dropout rate but acceptance rates are higher for community colleges than for 4-year colleges.

.. and very low (less than 5%) for both.

I didnt know that people from CC's had a better chance than a person at a 4 yr college.

contains information on transfer.

And well, I would be inclined to believe that self-motivation is extremely useful here, as the curriculum of 2-year colleges (and many 4-years too, considering that 2 years at Caltech is said to be similar to 4 years at many institutions) obviously pales to the Caltech curriculum so any person would need to study many additional topics on his own if he were to do well on the transfer exam.
