Transferring Questions

I will be a freshman at UW-Madison this fall. It was my back up, and I am hoping to attempt a transfer, and open up my options for the 2014-2015 school year.
I wish to enter med school after undergrad. How does transferring affect Pre-meds? I am looking at transferring to Rice, UC-Berkley, UT-Austin, Johns Hopkins, Brown, and Georgetown. I was going to try for HYPS, but there pretty much no chance. I know most of the Berkeley transfers are from Cali community colleges, but would it still be high for someone trying from UW- Madison? I want to finish UG in 4 years, idk how hard that will be with transfer credits and Pre-med requisites. I am thinking I majoring in Bio, Chem, or Math. Any help would be appreciated, such as some schools requiring certain courses, etc

Some schools are more transfer friendly than others so be mindful of that. It is easy for pre-meds to stay the course even as a transfer (generally speaking). Most schools will accept your credit with a a B- or better, so that is what you need to be sure you accomplish.
Admission rates for transfers at the schools you listed:
Rice - 26%
Johns Hopkins - 10%
Brown - 11%
Georgetown - 11%
UC Berkley - 23%
UT Austin - 45%

You should check the individual school requirements before you register for classes to be sure you have what you need to transfer in! Good luck!

UCs are not going to take you as a soph transfers, see the UC Transfers forum.

Zero chance at P as they don’t take transfers.

For information about transfers, use the Search function for ‘transfer’ on the Premed Topics forum. This is a FAQ, so please don’t post a thread, use the Search function to do some research first.

I would recommend giving your new school a chance first - an earnest chance. Not just because you’ll have more fun, but also because you’ll generally do better in your classes if you’re happy outside of class.

My goal is definitely to stay! I just want options open in case! I am really liking Brown right now! Do they take transfers as recruited athletes?

???

I don’t think transferring will affect you because you are Pre-med if you are referring to a program or something like that.
I can give u some help for a few schools:
Rice-U are at an advantage applying as a sophmore because you haven’t declared a major
UT-Austin: If you have a 3.7ish, you are basically guarenteed in.
I know a bit more about Rice and UT because I live in TX.

Berkeley-U need to be applying as a junior

Some schools take athletes and that does help.

I know about Berkeley. As for UT-Austin, are there any scholarships that I would be able to apply for? I am a very strong student, 4.0 GPA, 33 ACT, and I would rather go there than Madison, though both schools are very similar. I want it to be just as cheap as Madison (instate) however, or otherwise it wouldn’t be worth it I feel like.

I will definitely apply to Rice(again) since that was my first choice school from the start.

How would transfer credits look like at those 2 schools?

UT, in general, is not that friendly with scholarships. I think once you apply, they will determine what scholarships you are eligible for. You can’t really apply for any until you are accepted. Therefore, you won’t really know how much it costs until after you attend.

UT also doesn’t look at your SAT/ACT/High school grades

I’m pretty sure you will get in. If you have AP credits, you can apply for spring admission.
I think it will be easier to transfer credits to UT since UW and UT are well known public schools. As for Rice, it might be a little harder since you aren’t going to an in-state Texas school. But, if your credits cant transfer to UT, I’m sure that Rice will accept them. Do you already know what courses you are taking for fall? I can probably tell you what will transfer.

I will for sure do a full year at UW. For fall, I am taking Math 375 Honors (multi var calc with linear algera)(5 credits), Chem 109 Honors(5 credits) , Comm Arts 100 (3 credits), and I will be doing some sort of research (2 credits). For spring, I will take Math 376 Honors (multi var calc with diffEQ), probably a social science, and maybe o-chem along with research. I am not certain though about the spring classes.

The Calc will transfer over. Idk about the Chem since it’s an honors course. Is it basically similar to AP Chem? If it is, it will transfer over.

If you intend to transfer be sure to keep the syllabi from your classes to make the switch easier!

Ap chem is chem 103 at Madison. Chem 109 is Chem 103 AND 104 together in one semester. The Chem 109 Honors is the honors of the regular 109 class.

Are the syllabi that useful?

Yeah it will transfer to UT. I’m pretty sure it will transfer to Rice as well.

All my classes?

What’s the comm arts class? You only have 3 correct? 2/3 I know will transfer

It’s just a basic comm arts. I think it emphasizes speeches intertwined with composition. I am also doing research for 2 credits, but it is ~6 hrs per week. Will the research look good as I try transferring?

Maybe for the harder schools like Brown and Rice. UT won’t really care. Just get a 3.6-3.7 and you should get in.

Unlike the other schools, UT basically has a required gpa to get in

I think that speech class will transfer.

Thank you very much for your help! I appreciate it!
