I'm a freshmen and I'm majoring in Computer Science and the program is real good but I was wondering is it worth transferring to Tech or just going to Tech for Grad School? Also I want to make sure I'm taking the classes I need. I looked at the chart I know I need Physics and Calculus 1 and 2 so I'm going to take summer classes. Is the Computer Engineering combined with computer science worth it or should i stick with just computer science.

CompE and CS are different majors that will equip you to do different things. If one is “worth it” more than the other depends entirely on what you want to do after graduation.

The value of transferring to Tech depends on your current school. I wouldn’t necessarily worry about transferring from UIUC to GT, but UGA to GT is a different story.

When I graduate I want to get into game programming but if that doesn’t work out I want to be a software engineer. So to have both it will help me. Also I go to GSU. It has a good computer science program and I love going to their department but I heard graduating from Tech you get paid more and it looks better but would it matter if I still went to school after undergrad and went to Tech for graduate school?

Why do you think you’ll get into Tech’s grad program with a GSU degree?

1) Computer Engineering is very very very similar to the electrical engineering degree at GT. It’s not close to CS although you do take more CS classes as a Cmpe vs EE.

2) GT is right across the street from GSU. Why wouldn’t you just transfer?

Yes, it’s one of the top engineering schools in the country. Even if you don’t get an engineering degree your degree looks good. Transferring into GT is pretty easy…i would highly suggest transferring.

I will but I have to make sure I take the classes needed and website is kind of confusing. I’m going to take summer classes to make sure I have everything. I heard you need to wait a gap year too.

I think it’s a gap semester, not year. Call admissions and they’ll tell you exactly what you need.

Have you seen this: <a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission;

Also a word of caution, when I was taking CS classes they heavily advised students who transferred to retake the intro CS classes at tech because they are more advanced than the classes from most transfer schools in GA.

That website is about as clear as it gets with regards to the required classes for a transfer. What is the concern?

As far as a “gap” the issue, it’s basically a year. To apply in Fall 2011, you have to complete all of the requirements for a transfer by Summer 2011. If you apply in Fall 2011, you’ll be admitted in Fall 2011 or Spring 2012, but either way too late to register for Spring 2012. So the first semester you can start at Tech is Summer 2012. So there’s a year from finishing the requirements to transfer and actually starting at Tech. However, in that year you will still attend GSU and earn credits there.
