As the topic title implies, I am somewhat confused about transferring requirements. As in, I should plan my college schedule to coincide with the degree requirements of whatever schools I am applying to right? Is that how it works?

So I should choose classes that I know will have transferable credit to the university I am applying to, however; most of the classes I will be taking (I will be an incoming freshmen) are all required courses that I have to get out of the way. So does that mean most of these required courses will be transferable to the average university?

For example, If I take

1 English course
1 Language course
1 History or 1 Social Science, or 2 Social Sciences for a total of 4 classes my first semester, will that fulfill most requirements for whatever university I am applying to or does it become more complicated with whatever major I am applying for?

I would really appreciate it if someone could explain to me how the procedure works in relation to transferring between universities, credit requirements, etc. Thanks a lot, guys.

Oh, and is it looked down upon not to take a math or science course when trying to transfer? I am much more skilled in history/English so I was thinking about trying to play towards my strengths and getting a high GPA when transferring.

Because you are an English/history major (I presume), you may take whatever classes you wish so long as your current school's degree progress requirements permit you such latitude. Unless you are planning to major in a field that clearly requires math and/or science, such prerequisites do not concern you as a transfer candidate.

That said, try to take classes that fulfill degree requirements at your target schools (e.g.: Western Civ, Classical Mythology, Western Lit, etc.) and are interesting to you, as you will likely do better in them and kill two birds with one stone: many transferable credits and an impressive GPA. Also, upper level courses look favorable and can often be the most rewarding, so if you are keen on transferring, try some out perhaps.

The best answer to this question, I believe, is for you to select 3 - 5 target schools that you wish to transfer to and look into their basic requirements for transfer students. While a more generic approach of taking basic general ed courses will likely be okay, you still might find yourself in a bind if you haven't done your research.

For example, to transfer into any of the California public schools (UCs and CSUs), you must have completed one college level math course. Their definition of a college level math course is a class that has Algebra II as a pre-req. Many of the private colleges in California have the same requirement for math.

It might feel a bit early to be scoping out transfer colleges, but make a general guess at a few schools and look at their basic requirements. You will likely see some patterns ... for example, all the schools I looked into transfering into required a science with lab class, all required college level math, all required at least 2 English composition classes. Etc.

I am having a lot of trouble finding the credit requirements for certain schools, for example do you know what courses are required for Georgetown CAS or SFS?
