I attend a D3 university and hoped at my time of enrollment that I could walk on to the baseball team. The coach did not have tryouts and never returned any of my emails or calls. I am extremely unhappy socially and do not like my university as much as I used to and feel like baseball is something I really want to do. I play in a competitive summer league against kids ranging from JUCO to D1 and can hang with the best. I want to transfer to a D3 school and try and play baseball. Can I be contacted by coaches? Do I need written permission from my school even though I never even talked to the coach? Can I be recruited to play or be a preferred walk on or do I just have to transfer and hope for the best? Is my goal at all realistic or achievable?
Your goal is achievable, it’s just going to require some work on your part. If you are not on any roster you don’t need any permissinos to contact other schools or vice versa. Your summer league teammates, coaches or friends could be good resources to call on to give you a coaches name and number.
Make a list of schools you would like to consider transferring to and call each coach at those schools and ask them about walking on, trying out, etc. If you sit around waiting for something to happen, its probably not going to. You can make it happen if you are willing to put in the legwork and time contacting these coaches.
I would agree with the post above and suggest if you have additional NCAA related technical questions that you check out informedathlete.com. Just a little curious about your journey - did you make contact with the D3 coach at your current school prior to enrolling? Do they have club baseball - it’s a good alternative for some. Make sure you do your homework if you want to transfer. If you are playing in a competitive summer league with D1 guys, ask your prospective school to come out and see you play to get an idea if you are an option for his team. I’m not aware of collegiate summer leagues that have non-collegiate rostered players on their summer roster, but I take your word for it.
