Transferring Schools (SEAS to CLAS)

Well I'm pretty sure that I'll get into UVA because I got a likely letter and I'm finally starting to look into the various schools you can attend. When I applied, I really didn't know what I wanted to major in. I was interested in engineering when I was younger so I just applied to SEAS by default. Now that I've had some time to think about it, however, I've realized that science is perfect for my interests. My question is, can I transfer from SEAS to CLAS? I know that once you start you have to wait a semester or something but can I switch before I begin classes? And also, how exactly would one go about doing this???

You have to wait until the end of your first year, is my impression. If you’re seriously concerned, you could talk to an advisor once you are admitted or during summer orientation. However, no one is forcing you to take SEAS classes as a SEAS student, you could just take college classes for a year and apply to transfer then. Or, take the engineering first year classes for a semester (I know a bunch of people who just take college classes in the spring of 1st yr once they know they want to transfer out of SEAS), get some of your science requirements for CLAS done…

A friend of mine transferred into the e school a couple days before summer orientation. I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t be able to transfer into CLAS before you’re even a student.

If you’d like to switch schools, email the Dean of Admission (Dean Greg Roberts, gwr2g “at” virginia “dot” edu) right away! These requests are supposed to be submitted before March 15, but being one day late shouldn’t be a deal breaker.

There is a point when the Dean stops letting people move around because we have to hit certain target numbers for the size of each of the incoming groups.

The late switch oneguy mentioned was probably possible because there were students interested in moving in both directions (into and out of a certain school), but I’m not 100% sure.

thanks I will email him right away
