Transferring Schools Within UVA

I applied to the Liberal Arts and Sciences school, but I am also considering majoring in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or majoring/minoring in the two. If I matriculate to UVA, and decide later to choose one of these options, how does transferring into the School of Engineering work?

I did this – it’s a pretty straightforward process. You have to apply to transfer from CLAS to SEAS, but almost everyone is accepted. There’s a short application (grades so far, I think a short essay about why you want to transfer) that you submit to the SEAS undergraduate office. They accept you, and you’re switched. You can’t do it until the end of your first semester, so you would be in the College for one semester, but I’d recommend still enrolling in the introductory SEAS classes if you’re serious about switching so you don’t fall behind. Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have.

Computer Science is offered in both CLAS and SEAS, right? If so, what are the differences in majoring in the same thing from different colleges within UVA? And is Math also in CLAS?

Is Computer Science/Math a good blended double major? Would I be able to complete it in 4 years, is what I’m trying to ask I guess.

Do you know about UVA’s Undergrad Computer Science department? Is it difficult, how is the workload, what sorts of classes would I be taking, etc etc?

The CS in the CLAS is more “humanities” focused if that makes sense. It’s more used to make programs that can be used in economics and art for example.

The CS in SEAS is more theoretical.

CS/Math is a good combo which you could easily do in the College.

The CS dept is pretty good I think. Lots of stuff and research happening in it.

[UVA Computer Science - UVA Computer Science](http://www.cs.virginia.edu/) should give you more info.

I was reading a course catalog thing for UVA, and they mentioned somewhere that students are encouraged to take SEAS CS classes if possible. So I’m assuming if I needed to take some of the more programming oriented courses, I can. Thanks for the information!

All of the computer science classes are through SEAS, but there is an agreement with CLAS that you can make those classes a major. See www.cs.virginia.edu/bacs for information on that. You should take either CS1110 (SEAS CS intro class) or CS 1120 (CLAS CS intro class) your first year if you do not place out. If you are planning to take 1110, take it in the fall, because it is a required class for all SEAS first year engineers in the spring. I am a TA for that class, we have 525+ enrolled right now.

The difference between the SEAS version and the CLAS version is largely in the classes you take outside the major – if you’re in SEAS, your outside requirements are going to be things like physics, chemistry, engineering design, STS. If you’re in CLAS, you’ll be fulfilling your language, writing, and (less stringent) science requirements. You also have to take a few “integration electives” that tie CS into the humanities. Unless you have a compelling reason to take the CLAS route, I’d recommend going through SEAS, as you get the BS rather than BA, and you have the full career-building resources available from the Engineering School – plus, more analytical classes.

I want to double major in CS/Math if I attend UVA, is Math also in SEAS? If so, is it similar to CS in requirement, with more of a scientific requirement base? And is it also a BS instead of BA?

Math is through CLAS, a BA. It is very theoretical. You could do an applied math minor in SEAS. FYI, I don’t know why anyone thinks there is a difference in BA vs BS, there is equal grad school and job placement between the two degrees for CS.

I’m not sure why the first comment is stating that “almost everyone is accepted” with regards to transferring from CLAS to SEAS. Here (http://www.seas.virginia.edu/undergrad/transfers.php) it states approximately 30% are offered admission.

The 30% acceptance number is under “external transfers” from other institutions. I didn’t see a stat for transfers from the College of A&S to SEAS. I would imagine the earlier that a UVa student would apply to SEAS, the more likely they are to be accepted. I’ve heard of some students asking to have their acceptance shifted to SEAS before classes started.
