Transferring to 4 yr w/ with two previous colleges

Hi guys, first time poster here.

After high school I went to a 2 year technical college and did poorly. I did not like the program I was in, the town, etc and left with a 2.3 GPA.

I transferred to a community college where I'm doing great. My GPA is a 4.0 and I just joined the student government association and I'm a Senator for my campus.

But from the first college I went to I brought a ton of elective credits and that bad GPA. Does anyone know how this will affect my chances at transferring to a 4 year? I'm taking classes I did poorly in at the first school over again. I want admissions to see me as someone who turned themselves around after having a mediocre past academic record, rather than someone who's wishy-washy or unreliable.

The schools I'm looking to transfer to are UT-Austin and Rice (I guess it's a reach, but I won't know for sure until I try).

Thanks!
-Alex

Talk to the transfer counselors at you current community college. They see students exactly like you every single day of the week - it is their job after all to get you into the best college/university possible.

Basically, while you will have to include all of your transcripts (even the icky ones) in your application, what will matter more to the receiving university/college are the courses and GPA from your most recent college. So, stop worrying about the past, and concentrate on keeping up your GPA now and into the future.

Wishing you all the best!

Since you are re-taking all of the classes that you bombed before, ask your counselor if the new grades will void the old grades. This way your GPA is high. If you apply with a high GPA, then they will generally let you slide on your previous record. Hallelujah for academic renewal. :)
