Transferring to a UC from a CCC FAQ

Hello, DK here. Another restless night for me before school starts, so I figured I should start advising people on how to transfer and answer as much as question as possible.

A bit about myself. I am an incoming transfer for UCSD, communications major. I applied for Davis, SD, LA, and Cal. Albeit, only got into the first two, but my knowledge should be able to help the few that is in need.

Also, if there are any questions, let me know and I'll answer them as soon as possible

1) Whats more important : GPA or personal statements or EC?

From what I've seen, Cal sees the transcript as a holistic type of view, where as certain others like LA and SD are all number games. Higher your GPA, the better chance you get to attend the college. My personal order for most UC's are GPA > PS > EC.

2) Whats IGETC?

IGETC is a list of transferable classes that you need to complete (generally) to get accepted into the UC. It splits into 5-6 catagories, including English, Critical thinking, Math, Humanities, Social studies, Physical Science, Biological Science and Foreign language. As far as I know, the STEM people do not have to complete the IGETC, and have their own type of transferable programs. For the letters and science people, you need to complete IGETC (for the better chance of getting into the said college) and your major requirements.

3) Where can I get my major requirements?

Welcome to ASSIST will be your friend from here. There are list of classes and contracts that your CC and the UC will have.

4) What is TAG? Am I qualified for it?

TAG is a contract between your CC and the UC of your choice. It guarantees your spot in the UC as long as the contract has been fulfilled. For UCSD, 2014 is the last year that TAG will be available for students.

You can find the rest of the TAG requirements and dates (the registration for them starts on September) Transfer Admission Guarantee | UC Admissions

5) What are my chances for ______________________ I'm a ________________ major.

Generally speaking, youll be able to find all the statistics for your major online. Cal doesn't have this, but UCLA does. Your chances really depend on your GPA + Completion of the IGETC / Major program + a bit of your EC/PS. If you really cant point to a number, just comment below, Ill try to give my feedback as soon as possible.

6) Omg DK i am FREAKING out, when do I know about dates and stuff?

September, you want to try to tag into a UC
November, you need to send the application to the UC's
January, you need to update your transcripts
June 1st, you must must MUST submit your SIR to your college.

other than that, don't freak out and just carry on with your grades :)

7) What about W's? I have 2-3...

I honestly am convinced that W's dont make or break an application. If it pleases the ones who have lots of W's, I have a record of 11 W's due to my brother's mental instability (and my need to take care of him). The reason I didnt get into Cal or LA is due to my outrageously low GPA (3.2). 2-3 is nothing to worry about.

8) Can I appeal????

Yes, if you get rejected, you can always appeal. There are others who have gotten accepted off the appeal (I didnt do it, because UCD and UCSD already accepted me).

9) I got waitlisted!!! Am I doomed?

No. Generally speaking, when you get waitlisted, theres a good chance you'll get in. I got waitlisted for UCSD, but with a decent essay, I got accepted. Just cross your fingers for good luck, write a killer essay, and you will be fine.

10) My GPA is <low number=""> should I still apply?</low>

YES! I've seen people from my old CC that got accepted to Riverside and SC with a 2.6-2.7. With plenty of luck, people have a way of working things out. But just in case (like me) apply to couple CSU's. I've applied to LB and Pomona just in case I wasn't accepted.

11) I'm about to get rescinded because of ____________!

Call your college immediately. They generally give you a chance to make up the grade lost or give you a chance to explain what happened. Dont give up or get depressed because of this, the colleges do not want you to fail. They will work with you.

12) Which do I choose? UC____ or UC_____

That is up to you my friend. Every UC has its charms and strengths. Its up to you to choose which one you want to pursue.

13) Your guide sucks DK.

Well I dont like you too :(

At anyrate, if theres any questions please dont be afraid to comment below. Ill keep updating this as good questions come up.

For TAG, you basically fill out background info, list every class and classes planned for the spring too right?(planning to transfer fall 2014. Then after submitting can you edit it if you messed something up? After everythings done, how do you know everything went well? Or do you find out when the UC gives out admission letters?

I have a question about UCSB tag, it says you need a 3.2 gpa by the end of “fall 2013”. I have a 3.0 right now, if I submit a TAG next month do I have to update for fall coursework at the end of December? When should I expect to receive approval of TAG?

@JN : Yes, you fill out everything.
You have until end of september to change anything. You’ll get a confirmation at the end of August (it was the 30th for me)

@Ragnarok : Mm, generally speaking, you dont want to risk it with TAG. Yes the application says yes, but I dont know, since you can apply to just one. If you are dead set on SB, then sure, go for it.

Whoops, meant do UCs confirm after September that I am eligible for TAG and that I just have to maintain the requirements?

I think November 1st through 15th is when they let you know that they accepted your TAG or not?

Oops, yeah. Its not August (Silly me), its near the mid/end of November.

Heres what it should look like

Thanks OP
true about GPA>>>PS>EC…I talked to some counselors about it too and they said GPA is the first thing they look and EC is the last!!! especially for transfer students.

Hey, my question is if I apply for a tag and I get accepted, do I have to commit myself to that school or can I apply to other schools and then consider all my options?

Also, if I get accepted by tag, do I still have to write a college essay and would that have an affect at all getting in? Thanks in advance.

Hey Man! I am a communication transfer myself, I was just wondering why you did not apply for UCSB. To me It looks like their program is pretty strong. At least that is the vibe I got from my research/visits with the campus and professors.

@refreshe18 : You dont have to commit to a school after TAG. I got tagged into Davis, but I went for UCSD instead. It just gives you a chance (a choice more like)

You need to write an essay still. TAG guarentees you a spot but you need to write 2 essays to apply to other UC’s (all the UC use 2 prompts)

@Entrep : I was going to apply to UCSB, however, with the guarentee to TAG with Davis and since I am going into law (meaning nothing matters except my GPA + school + LSAT) and I realized that going into the best college possible is the best choice I got.

Also, Im not a partier :[

Why didn’t you get accepted into Cal for Communications (or Media Studies)? Do you mind sharing your stats?

@ocnative : Funny enough, my GPA was 3.2-3.4, which was really low. Ergo, Ill applied as a Asian American Studies. I wasn’t expecting to get in, but it was something I wanted to try for ****s and giggles (especially since my essay was really really good)

Best of luck in Law School man! One last question, when you add what “Colleges/Universities” I am wondering whether I should add MOOC courses I have taken with Edx and Coursera. The institutions are not listed, but you do not even get credit for them, you just take courses from universities for fun and no price. Would that count?

@Entrep : Thanks! Im going to need all the luck I can get.
And I doubt it will count, however, you’ll have a chance to explain why you took the class (and what you got out of it) during your Personal statement. It may make a great story about your passion (or how you are well-rounded  )

Hey I got another question and thanks for answering my previous one.

I really want to tag to UCSD and my transferable GPA is 3.42(overall 3.46), and I am really confident that I can get a 3.5 by next year before I transfer. So my question is does it matter if my GPA is borderline and will my personal statement factor into if I get in or not?

Should I just be better off tagging to maybe Irvine?

I have a question about TAG. UCD said that they prefer students that are full-time. Currently, I am a part time student majoring in Psychology. Only because I finished all my requirements (IGETC, graduation, etc). I have 89 UC units. I am really scared that they will reject me because of this. I talked to some counselors and they said it was okay but idk. I was wondering what was your GPA when you got accepted to UCD?

Sorry for the late replies, was busy moving in.

@refreshe : My two cents is (i was around 3.4 when i applied) is that TAG should be reserved for guarentee admission. I know UCSD is appealing, but I dont think its worth risking. Just apply as a regular and youll probably get in.

TAG to irvine, apply reg as UCSD.

@Tubbyha : If you can explain to them they probably wont. They will ask why you werent a full time student, and theres a column to explain. As long as its reasonable youll be okay.

I was at a 3.2-3.3 GPA upon acceptance.

Depends on the campus.

For example, Berkeley Letters and Science (including math, statistics, physics, molecular and cell biology, and integrative biology majors) transfers may use IGETC to fulfill breadth requirements, but Berkeley Engineering transfers may not. San Diego transfers who complete IGETC may have additional requirements depending on which of the six residential colleges they enroll in.

Transfer students who do not complete IGETC must complete the breadth requirements of the campus and division that they transfer to, some of which may be fulfilled by pre-transfer course work; some specific course requirements may have to be complete before transfer (e.g. Berkeley Letters and Science transfers need to complete reading and composition, quantitative reasoning, and foreign language before transfer if they do not complete IGETC).

My question requires a little backstory:
Last spring, it was looking like I was on the right track to transferring on time with the exception of one thing–I was behind on my math credits (because I assessed fairly low.) My counselor recommended I reassess and was against me taking summer courses in mathematics since it wasn’t my strong point. Of course, I opted against her advice and I took the summer course for P/NP and didn’t pass. I know this is completely my fault. I registered to retake the math course, but I was waitlisted and never got a spot, my option now is to reassess and hope to skip TWO levels of mathematics in order to reach a transferable level.

I still want to apply to UCSD because I’d rather try then to sit another year at a CC knowing I didn’t try. So my counselor told me to apply and promise the UC that I would be at a transferable math level by the end of Spring on top of taking over 20+ units to complete the 60 I need for transfer.

My transferable GPA is around a 3.5 (not including Fall 13) and my cumulative is around a 3.2. I also have UniversityLink, but I do not have TAG.

Is applying to UCSD in the upcoming months a complete waste of money/time? Will they not even consider me because of my math level? Thanks in advanced!
