Transferring to a UC from OOS

This fall, I'm going to be a freshman at a private university in WA, but my dream is to be at a California school. I just wanted to know about OOS transfers (how difficult it is, how to get the right credits and how financial aid is) and also about which UC schools are good for history as well as film.

My plan as of right now is to apply to UCB, UCLA and UCSB. Would I be better off trying to apply at a private Cali school?

UCs give priority to California community colleges. They are designed to take in students from CCCs, with more than 90% of all transfer students coming from them. It’s very difficult to get in from other schools, especially from schools that aren’t in the UC or CSU system; and even then it is difficult. The biggest problem is course articulation. UCs (especially UCLA and Berkeley) are very big on completing pre-reqs for your major, and your school will likely won’t offer all of the equivalent courses, putting you at a serious disadvantage. There’s nothing wrong with applying, but just don’t count on being accepted.

A much better bet would be private colleges, such as USC, who accept transfers from all over. Remember that all schools have their own requirements, and you should do your best to meet them. And of course, have a good GPA.

Thanks! I really appreciate your feedback. I’ll still apply to the UC’s I wanted, but I’ll definitely look at more private schools.
