Transferring to Annenberg

Hey guys,

I'm currently a Southern CA native and a rising sophomore at Indiana University, where I am a journalism major. Although I love IU, the distance, rising tuition, and strain of commuting back and forth from IN to CA for breaks is starting to get to me. Attending USC would give me the chance to attend a world-class journalism school while also living at home, which will majorly cut back on costs.

I am TENTATIVELY considering transferring to Annenberg in order to study journalism, potentially for the 2012-2013 school year. By that time I will have obtained junior status. However, before even going forth with the application process, I would like to get an idea of my chances. I currently have a 3.66/4.00 GPA and am wondering if this is strong enough to be considered for admission. Of course, I will endeavor to raise it next year so that I can be the strongest candidate possible. I am also involved in various student media outlets on campus and other clubs/organizations as well, including a sorority that has a chapter on the USC campus.

Any insight and advice would be appreciated.

I think with Annenberg, all you gotta do is get into USC. Then once you’re already there, and have taken 16 units (one semester with 4 classes) and have maintained a 3.0 GPA then you can easily change your major to Comm.

if you do well in your journalism classes and have a nice portfolio, I think you’d be a competitive candidate. It’s OK if you got a B in your science GE class, but you should have As, A-s and no more than 2 or 3 B+s in your core JOUR classes.

See if you can get a 3.7ish GPA and get good recs from your journalism professors and I think those chances will improve.

It is very important to make sure you take courses this coming year that will be accepted at USC to fulfill all the GE requirements. I don’t believe any of the journalism courses will transfer and there is a very specific program of Journalism core courses that must be taken once you get to USC. You need to get the GEs out of the way so there will be room for those in your schedule.
